Job: Program Coordinator, Environmental Science Job Summary: Reporting to the co-chairs and faculty of the Environmental Science Department the Program Coordinator supports a range of activities in the department including: conducting research with students and professors, managing laboratories, assisting with purchasing supplies and equipment, complying with safety and waste regulations, maintaining analytical instruments, preparing for and participating in field trips, connecting with alumnae, publishing a newsletter, coordination of departmental events, and diversity engagement. This position requires occasional nights and weekends. Job Description: Duties & Responsibilities:
  • Work with students and professors assisting them in their research.
  • Run, maintain and provide technical assistance for scientific equipment in the department and as needed at Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory, including the ion chromatograph, ICPs, Millipore water system, balances, pipettes, ovens, incubators, field equipment etc.
  • Research, recommend, purchase, and prepare laboratory equipment and materials; supervise chemical database; arrange for the proper waste disposal of both chemical and biological waste.
  • Work with faculty to design and implement field trips. This includes the annual departmental retreat to Black Rock Forest along with faculty field work.
  • Participate in safety committee meetings and obtain the standard basic safety training for both the College and the city required in the department. Take responsibility for staying current with safety procedures and policies.
  • Work with faculty on special course related activities, including the Senior Seminar mini conferences, career sessions, poster printing and presentations, and other classes. This includes upkeeping of the senior thesis database.
  • Coordinate community building departmental events, e.g. annual retreat, coffee hours, mentoring program, etc.
  • Develop, implement and maintain engagement with alumnae. Write departmental newsletter each semester. Maintain departmental alumnae database. Develop alumnae mentors, establish networking opportunities for students, and maintain departmental social media sites.
  • Organize the Departmental Peer Mentor Program and help manage grants
  • Supervision of 6-12 student workers throughout the summer and school year.
  • Independent work is expected but the position is full-time in person.
  • Daily contact with students, peers, and faculty.
  • General supervision and broad instructions, planning, and arranging own work toward previously defined objectives
  • Performs additional duties and responsibilities as needed.
Skills, Qualifications & Requirements: Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:
  • Laboratory and Field Experience
  • Ability to plot and analyze departmental data
  • Strong computer skills including MS Office, databases, Google apps, social media and basic publishing skills
  • Data analysis skills such as GIS, R, or Python.
  • Strong organizational skills. Takes initiative, able to establish priorities and work independently and as part of a team
  • Excellent interpersonal, oral and written communication
  • Ability to interact effectively with faculty, staff, students, alumnae, vendors, and others
  • Ability to work under pressure and balance competing responsibilities
  • Willingness to work occasionally during evenings and weekends
Qualifications:
  • BA/BS degree in environmental or other related sciences
  • Science laboratory experience, and/or Field experience.
Preferred Qualifications:
  • Experience in Environmental Science Research
Physical Requirements:
  • Must be able to do field and lab work.
This is a full time, in person position. Salary Range: $62,500 - $67,500 The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training.
