Department: Upward Bound Program Title: Mentor/Tutor (Regular Student Worker or Professional Tutor) Location: Long Island City HS, SJU campus for meetings etc. This position is available through December 31, 2024. Job Purpose:
- To provide academic support to underserved students that will increase their academic performance and preparation for postsecondary education
Job Responsibilities:
- Provide academic support to high school students and academic advisement to project participants
- Assist with outreach and the collection of project services data (i.e.- attendance, event sign-in sheets, registration forms etc.) and with the coordination of educational trips and college visits
- Attend program activities including educational/cultural field trips, family events, and college tours
- Participate in supervision meetings & trainings
Minimum Qualifications:
- Pursue a bachelor's degree with a minimum GPA of 3.0
- Have a minimum of two years of tutoring experience working with high school or college underserved student populations
- Demonstrate proficiency in the academic area for which tutoring is provided (Math, English, and/or Science)
Skills/Requirements:
- Solid foundation in at least two content areas (i.e., Math, English, and/or Science)
- Ability to work independently and as part of a team
- Excellent communication (verbal/written) and problem-solving skills
- Excellent computer skills (i.e.- Microsoft Office, Excel, etc)
- Commitment to supporting positive youth development
- Bilingual (Spanish) strongly encouraged
Work Schedule:
- This is a school-based program
- Monday-Friday within the hours of 10:00am- 4:00pm
- Some evenings may be required for events
- Schedules will vary based on program needs
