Salary: $20.43 Hourly Location : NC 28712, NC Job Type: Part-Time Job Number: 00126 Department: Sheriff's Office Opening Date: 07/01/2023 Closing Date: Continuous FLSA: Non-Exempt About The Sheriff's Office Detention Division is responsible for the safe keeping of inmates awaiting trial or sentenced to serve time in the county jail. Detention Officers are responsible for processing all incoming inmates, supervise day to day activities of inmates, maintaining inmate records, ensuring inmates make all court appearances, coordinate inmate transfers to other facilities, having daily sick call, coordinate inmate visitation, and maintain inmates' property. Pre-employment Requirements include:
  • Be of good moral character;
  • Be a citizens of the United States;
  • Be at least 21 years old;
  • Be a high school graduate, or the equivalent (GED);
  • Be able to produce a negative result on a drug screen;
  • Pass a thorough background investigation, including a personal interview
  • Not possess a prohibitive criminal history.
  • Post-Employment Training requirements include:
  • NC Department of Justice Detention Officer Certification Course (DOCC) = 182 hours
  • TCSO Field Training Program = 336 hours
  • Annual NC Department of Justice Mandated In-Service Training = 20 to 32 hours
  • Division of Criminal Information (DCI) training = 181 hours

    • Ensures the safety and security of inmates within the County jail; controls inmates by performing routine facility checks and conducting head counts.
    • Receives and processes inmates into custody of institution; searches prisoners; takes charge of personal property.
    • Verifies release orders.
    • Escorts and transports inmates to court and other required appointments.
    • Verifies inquiries pertaining to inmate status.
    • Oversees the handling and distribution of medications and meals.
    • Enters information into the system and updates records and files as necessary.
    • Enters information into and maintains visitation log.
    • Performs other related duties as assigned.
    PHYSICAL DEMANDS This work requires the regular exertion of up to 10 pounds of force, frequent exertion of up to 50 pounds of force and occasional exertion of over 100 pounds of force; work frequently requires speaking or hearing and occasionally requires standing, walking, sitting, using hands to finger, handle or feel, climbing or balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching or crawling, reaching with hands and arms, pushing or pulling, lifting and repetitive motions; work requires close vision, distance vision, ability to adjust focus, depth perception, color perception, night vision and peripheral vision; vocal communication is required for expressing or exchanging ideas by means of the spoken word and conveying detailed or important instructions to others accurately, loudly or quickly; hearing is required to perceive information at normal spoken word levels and to receive detailed information through oral communications and/or to make fine distinctions in sound; work requires preparing and analyzing written or computer data, operating machines, operating motor vehicles or equipment and observing general surroundings and activities. WORK ENVIRONMENT Work requires primary exposure to the indoors; some work may occur outdoors in cold weather; requires exposure to fumes or airborne particles, exposure to blood borne pathogens and may be required to wear specialized personal protective equipment; work occasionally requires wet, humid conditions (non-weather) and working in high, precarious places; work is generally in a moderately noisy location (e.g. business office, light traffic).     • Knowledge of the practices of modern penology as related to the supervision and care of persons under institutionalized restraint.
    • Ability to enforce institutional rules firmly and fairly.
    • Ability to detect potential behavior problems of inmates.
    • Ability to detect the early symptoms of common health problems.
    • Ability to carry out oral and written directions accurately.
    • Ability to supervise the activities of large groups of inmates.
    • Ability to prepare records and reports.
    • Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with associates, inmates, attorneys and the general public.
    Education and ExperienceMinimum Education and Experience: High School Diploma or its equivalent and no required experience, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Required Licenses or Certifications: Detention Officer and Taser certifications. Possession of or ability to acquire First Aid, AED and CPR Certifications. Driver's License valid in the State of North Carolina. Additional Requirements: None specified. Electronic Payroll Deposit - County Employees are paid bi-weekly, 26 times per year.     • The Wellness Center is open M-W-F 8am -12pm and 1pm to 4pm and T-TH 8am-12pm.
    • The Wellness Center is a partnership between Transylvania County and the City of Brevard.
    • County Employees may use the Wellness Center for all services at no cost.
    • Dependents over the age of 12 who are on your Medical plan may also use the Wellness Center.
    • Appointments are encouraged to help minimize any wait and to make the Center Services flow easier.
    • Time away from your work location to visit the Wellness Center is not changed to leave.
    • Services include: Routine bloodwork monitoring, allergy injections, monitoring chronic illnesses, manage and authorize prescriptions, coordinate referrals, school physicals and testing for flu, mono and strep.
