The person in this role will work from the Medtronic facility located in Fridley, MN

In this exciting role, you will apply microscopy and surface analysis methods for understanding fundamental materials properties. The successful candidate will work in a creative, dynamic R&D environment characterizing advanced materials, correlating materials properties to function, and solving materials related problems across all Medtronic operating units. The work environment is a combination of onsite in Fridley MN, and part-time flexible location.

Day to day responsibilities may include, but are not limited to:

+ Lead efforts for problem solving related to materials issues

+ Be the enterprise expert in vibrational spectroscopy, knowledgeable with advanced instrumentation capabilities and operation, as well as with data interpretation. Maintain analytical equipment in optimal working condition. Train and consult with new and less experienced users.

+ Operate analytical instrumentation in standard and advanced modes for understanding the material of interest (FTIR, Raman, SEM, EDS, profilometry, ellipsometry, SPM, XRF, XRD, XPS, TOF-SIMS)

+ Determine the optimal analytical methods to understand the material of interest and gain information needed

+ Determine optimal preparation and perform preparation of samples for analysis by microscopy or surface analysis

+ Interpret and evaluate data from microscopy and surface analysis instrumentation

+ Write reports summarizing analysis

+ Communicate results to scientists and engineers who have a range (low and high) of understanding of the analysis methods and capabilities

+ Maintain substantial knowledge of state-of-the art principles and theories and may contribute to scientific literature and conferences

+ May participate in development of patent applications

+ May coordinate interdepartmental activities and research efforts

MUST HAVE (Minimum Qualifications)

+ Bachelor's degree

+ **4+ years of experience with a bachelor's degree or 2+ years of experience with an advanced degree**

NICE TO HAVE (Preferred Qualifications)

+ Strongly Preferred:

+ Bachelor's or advanced degree in chemistry, materials science, engineering, physics or related discipline

+ Advanced expertise in vibrational spectroscopy (FTIR or Raman): demonstrated experience with advanced instrument operation and data interpretation.

+ Demonstrated experience in operation and interpretation of data from two or more of the following techniques: Raman, SEM, profilometry, XPS, TOF-SIMS, XRD, SPM, ellipsometry

+ Demonstrated experience in materials related problem solving

+ Materials related problem solving - experience in industry

+ PhD degree in chemistry, materials science, engineering physics or related field

+ Detail oriented with good organizational skills

+ Self-motivated and takes initiative

+ Excellent communication and writing skills

Salary ranges for U.S (excl. PR) locations (USD):$106,400.00 - $159,600.00
