Position Information

The New Hanover County Sheriff's Office is accepting applications for full time Detention Officers. Detention Officers are responsible for performing duties relative to the safety, security, and detention of inmates at the New Hanover County Detention Facility. Duties include

  • Processing incoming inmates into custody by completing paperwork, searching prisoners, obtaining and securing personal property, assigning and escorting inmates to proper holding facilities, and explaining rules and regulations of the detention center.
  • Patrolling jail areas to maintain order and prevent escape.
  • Inspecting inmates and cells to ensure cleanliness and sanitation; confiscating contraband.
  • Obtaining and escorting inmates for visitations and appearances in court, records visits, inspecting all items brought to the jail, and checking incoming and outgoing mail.
  • Ensuring all inmates are provided with daily meals and snacks.
  • Responding to calls for medical assistance as needed.
  • Transporting inmates to and from court and hospitals.
  • Preparing records and reports on inmates.
  • Performing work during emergency/disaster situations.
**** Salary Information: The starting hourly rate for a Detention Officer is $19.25 an hour or $42,050 annually, plus a $2,000 one time sign on bonus. New Hanover County offers:

You do not need to fill out this form. A Recruitment Detective will review this with you and have you sign when you meet. Qualifications High School Diploma or General Equivalency Diploma (GED). Must be at least 20 years of age at the time of application and a citizen of the United States. Please note assignment is at the discretion of the Sheriff. Must be available to work rotating shifts, weekends, holidays, extended hours and during emergency situations. Candidates must successfully complete a written examination, physical abilities test, structured interview, background investigation, polygraph examination, psychological evaluation, and medical examination. Licenses/Certifications
  • Valid NC Driver's License
  • Certification as a detention officer within time lines set by the North Carolina Sheriffs' Education and Training Standards Commission.
  • CPR Certification within one (1) year of employment.
Other Information

Additional Documentation Required: The following items will be required to submit to a Recruitment Detective during the process. You do not have to attach these to your application at this time.

  • Birth Certificate (1 Photocopy)
  • Driver's License (1 Photocopy)
  • Social Security Card (1 Photocopy)
  • High School Diploma or GED certificate (1 Photocopy)
  • College Degree(s) (1 Photocopy)
  • One head and shoulder color photograph
  • Certified criminal history from every county you have resided in for the past ten years including where you attended high school (you will be notified by Recruitment when to obtain these)
  • If you were in the military, a copy of your DD214 (Member copy 4) will need to be provided showing your type of discharge. Please include a notarized letter explaining any disciplinary action against you during your time of service.
  • For all prior criminal charges provide a notarized statement explaining the incident. (For all Misdemeanors & Felonies only)
  • Notification of any pending citation or criminal charge (If you receive any citation or criminal charge while in the hiring process provide immediate notification the Recruitment Office as well as documentation once it has been disposed of)
  • Naturalization Papers (If you are a Naturalized Citizen)
