POSITION OVERVIEW

The primary objective of this position is to plan, implement and coordinate high-quality OST & summer youth development activities for grades 6-12 under supervision of the Senior Director, Youth + Future Focus. The Media + College Access Coordinator will engage in intentional relationship building with youth, families and community partners in the Near North community and across North Minneapolis. They will be charged with building out and facilitating arts, media and storytelling activities, organizing opportunities/partnerships for youth internships and clubs. They will lead the FANS Scholars college access cohort at Oak Park and facilitate media activities within Minneapolis Public Schools Beacons program. In addition to facilitating programming, this position will provide 1:1 goal-setting and case management services for 16 FANS Scholars annually and supervise tutor(s) and college intern(s), as assigned, to co-facilitate activities.

Primary Responsibilities (Essential Functions)

Strategy and Thought Leadership

  • Creation of high-quality youth development activities focused on storytelling, media, narrative and youth advocacy skills delivered through experiential learning in collaboration with Youth Department + North News team leaders, including program design, implementation, reflection, and continuous improvement.
  • Model asset-based, community youth development practices in direct service programming.
  • Collaborate with internal media social enterprises North News and KRSM to build out agency-wide youth media platforms to promote youth storytelling.
  • Collaborate with PUC's Youth Food Systems team to increase access to food justice learning and paid internships opportunities for youth in the across North Minneapolis.
  • Contribute to “FANS Advocates” team to broaden opportunities for the agency-wide program (events, college tours, navigating systems of higher education, co-develop educational equity framework).
  • Facilitate youth/stakeholder reflection sessions to center the desires, passions of program participants.
  • Pilot and develop new activities based on participant feedback.
  • Make recommendations for program improvements.
  • Stay current with and connected to available community resources.

Operations and Outcomes

  • Develop and execute on program goals related to culturally relevant youth development and career pathways in Youth Storytelling/Media/Journalism fields.
  • Planning and implementation of weekly after-school group sessions at Minneapolis Public School sites and Oak Park Neighborhood Center.
  • Supervise and facilitate youth internships.
  • Participate in ongoing program improvement planning with Youth Department, including annual M3 evaluation retreat.
  • Conduct outreach and enrollment for all programs. Actively promote the program in community and recruit youth participants.
  • Ensure daily attendance recording and all necessary other tracking logs and record keeping for progress towards goals.
  • Ensure intakes, attendance + youth surveys are completed for your specific program. Work with Youth Evaluation Manager on outcome planning and timelines.
  • Direct Communication with youth and families (EX: scheduling, updates, check-ins, requesting feedback, events).
  • Create feedback channels for partners, families and youth to improve the program and address the specific needs of youth participants.
  • Lead facilitator (FANS Advocate) for Oak Park. Manage an active roster of 16-20 High-School FANS Scholars (school-year) including 1:1 goal-setting and case management and a weekly cohort with all students. Coordinate 1:1 youth mentoring, coaching, training and supportive services including goal setting and goal tracking for each student. Support students on summer engagement plans (internships, jobs, camps, etc), and check-in throughout summer.
  • Support youth Internship cohorts or clubs through facilitating, co-teaching, workshops, individual goal setting and data tracking.

People and Community Development

  • Co-host three annual family events to assist immigrant parents/caregivers in navigating school systems and higher education.
  • Collaborate with PUC Youth Employment team to identify new opportunities for the youth you serve and provide internal and external referrals for wraparound services.
  • Assist in creating new community partnerships to enhance program offerings and opportunities for youth; participate in citywide and larger networks regarding youth development or other relevant affinity groups or coalitions.
  • Establish community standards with/for youth participants to provide an emotionally, psychologically and physically safe environment for all youth participants.
  • Create youth-centered environments that are inclusive and identity-affirming.
  • Direct supervision (including training, scheduling and feedback/performance reviews) for Youth Specialists, youth interns, volunteers, tutors and college interns, as assigned.
  • Customize 1:1 mentoring, coaching, supportive services including goal setting and goal tracking for participants. Navigate post-secondary systems access and coach individual youth.

Financial Management

  • Actively participate in planning and managing expenses for materials, supplies, field trips and events.
  • Document all related expenses.
  • Record time tracking for grants.

Required Skills/Experience

  • Must have experience and comfort level in being an onsite program supervisor and building leader.
  • Must have a valid driver's license and be willing to transport youth in the agency van.
  • A minimum of two years of experience in youth development or K-12 education setting.
  • A minimum of associate's degree/preferred bachelor's degree (human services, education, youth studies, related studies).
  • Able to build positive, nonjudgmental relationships with community.
  • Open to working in low-income neighborhoods with diverse community.
  • Understanding of appropriate personal boundaries and professional ethics.
  • Ability to work a flexible schedule including evenings (school-year) and weekends (occasionally).
  • Self-motivating with excellent time management and accountability skills.
  • Dedication to social, racial, economic and restorative justice with a deep interest in building authentic relationships and engaging Black, Indigenous, Immigrant and Youth of Color.
