Duties and Responsibilities

The Core Pre-Deployment Training Materials (CPTM) contain essential knowledge required by allpeacekeeping personnel - military, police and civilians - to function effectively in a UN peacekeeping operation. As such, the CPTM provides a shared understanding of the core principles, doctrine, and policies of UN peacekeeping. The CPTM is required for use both by Member States in the pre-deployment training of uniformed personnel and by DPO in the pre-deployment training of civilian personnel. ITS has updated the CPTM to include new policies, standards, and thematic areas. There are 34 lessons divided into content, slides and learning support. A copy editor with peacekeeping expertise is required to conduct a final edit of the full set of materials to ensure consistent style, clear language (kept at a 12th grade level understanding of English) and adherence to UN standards. This Individual Contractor (IC) job opening is for 40 days full-time and will be home-based/remote. The IC will be working with the Training Policy and Standards Team of the Integrated Training Service (ITS) in the Division of Policy, Training and Evaluation, in the Department of Peace Operations. The IC will be under the overall supervision of the Team Leader of the Training Policy and Standards Team. The IC will be responsible for copy editing and proofreading 34 lessons, slides and associated learning activities applying the CPTM 2024 Style Guide and UN Editorial Manual. The IC will consult with Project Team on an ongoing basis to incorporate their input. The CPTM 2024 includes a Guidance on Use document, 34 lessons divided into three modules and two annexes. A lesson is comprised of three files: a lesson with substantive content, a learning support file with learning activities, and a slide deck. All editing work is to be carried out in UK English (Oxford) in compliance with UN standards while ensuring a coherent style and 'voice' throughout all lessons that is easy to understand for non-native speaking peacekeepers. Readability should be at a 12th grade level and the IC is to ensure clear, accurate and consistent content. Specifically, the IC is to: 1. Check grammar and spelling, tone and style, and ensure the texts flow smoothly. 2. Carry out proofreading to check for errors in the texts, correct spelling and punctuation, mistakes and typos, formatting issues and inconsistencies. As part of the contract, the IC must submit a work plan to the Project Team indicating the planned timeline for submitting each specific output.
