Work is performed under the moderate supervision of the Vector Control Director. Position Responsibilities Performs laboratory and field work to prevent infestation of mosquitoes and other insects; prepares necessary reports; maintains records and files. (These are intended only as illustrations of the various types of work performed. The omission of specific duties does not exclude them from the position if the work is similar, related, or a logical assignment to the position.)
  • Performs laboratory and field work to prevent infestation of mosquitoes and other insects.
  • Conduct site visits for the purpose of trapping mosquitoes and other insects for analysis and identification in the laboratory and the field.
  • Identifies areas of infestation and potential infestation areas; clears areas and applies pesticides to prevent breeding and further infestation of mosquitoes, fire ants and other insects.
  • Operates a heavy equipment hauler to haul heavy equipment to designated areas.
  • Clears or creates ditches for drainage to prevent mosquito breeding.
  • Removes logs and other debris from streams and other inaccessible areas using skidder tractors, backhoes, bush axes, chain saws and cables.
  • Repairs, maintains and lubricates tools and equipment such as sprayers, chain saws, etc., and assists in minor equipment maintenance.
  • Conducts analyses, maintains records and prepares necessary reports.
  • Conducts beaver site investigations for the purpose of trapping beaver and removal of beaver dams by hand or by equipment
  • Performs nightly mosquito spraying to prevent mosquito borne diseases with pesticides
  • Performs herbiciding along the river, creeks, and tributaries for invasive aquatic vegetation from a boat
  • Knowledge to fly drones for inspections on creeks and marshes
  • Performs assigned functions as a Disaster Ready Team (DRT) member, if appointed or volunteer
  • Performs related tasks as required
QualificationsGeneral knowledge of the methods, procedures, regulations, hazards, tools, and equipment used in or associated with dispensing pesticides for controlling carriers of vector borne diseases; general knowledge of the biology and control of mosquitoes, fire ants and other insects; general knowledge of the traffic law and regulations governing equipment operation; some knowledge of geography and soil characteristics; skill in the application of pesticides; basic boating skills; ability to safely operate all necessary equipment, vehicles, and machinery; ability to understand and follow oral and written instructions; mechanical aptitude; ability to make minor repairs and adjustments to equipment; ability to perform manual labor for extended periods, often under unfavorable weather conditions; ability to perform basic computer skills; ability to effectively communicate, both orally and in writing; ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships with the general public and fellow employees. Education, Experience, and Special RequirementsHigh school diploma or GED and moderate experience handling public health pesticides, operating heavy equipment, and mosquito control, or equivalent combination of education and experience. Special Requirements Possession of or ability to obtain appropriate public pesticide licenses and certifications within six months of hire.
