Overview:

SCOPE: Nexus Health Multi Specialty is seeking an exceptional Cast Technician. This position will be required to apply all types and complexities of casts. This position is often required to work under the direct supervision of a physician and/or nurse practitioner. This position is required to provide casting services in the operating room in accordance with operating room procedures and protocols. This position must demonstrate a high level of competency in the areas of cast application, cast removal, traction techniques, and casting protocols.

Responsibilities:

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPOSIBILITIES

  • Work as an integral part of the casting team to provide consistent delivery of quality patient care.
  • Accurately evaluate prescriptions and effectively communicate with providers.
  • Provide patient care per Gillette, Joint Commission quality standards.
  • Is able to independently apply all types and complexities of casting and or splinting as assigned by the department supervisor.
  • Maintain constant awareness of safe patient handling including lifting, transfers, and positioning, requesting assistance whenever necessary or appropriate.
  • Complete the comprehensive training checklist per requirements of the department.
  • Collaborate with healthcare team to determine proper intervention.
  • Assist with training for all types of casting and splinting as assigned by casting supervisor.
  • Complete documentation promptly, effectively detailing events of the appointment including; initial assessment, cast application/removal, patient/family education and details of the plan for follow-up.
  • Ensures individual work areas and exam rooms are regularly cleaned and kept orderly to promote a safe and efficient work area.
Qualifications:

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • Must be ROT (Registered Orthopedic Technologist) or OTC (Orthopedic Technologist Certified) certified within 24 months.
  • Prior experience working with patients in a clinic or hospital setting, or completion of a medical-related degree.
  • Travel to offsite clinics.
  • Current CPR; BLS (Basic Life Support) for Healthcare Providers through the American Heart Association) certification or obtain certification within 90-days of hire.

Preferred

  • Experience with casting, traction, splinting, and orthopedic appliance skills.
  • Prior experience with pediatric patients in the field of orthopedics or casting.
  • Military training as a medic or corpsman in the field of orthopedics.
  • Is enrolled in or has successfully completed an orthopedics school program meeting minimum standards set by the National Association of Orthopedic Technologists (NAOT), or the American Society of Orthopedic Professionals (ASOP).

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

  • Demonstrated proficiency in interpersonal communication related to patients, families, co-workers, and providers.
  • Interest in working with children and adolescents with disabilities and their family.
  • Understands medical terminology.
  • Must maintain high degree of professionalism.
  • Must foster positive and inclusive work environment for both patients and peers.

Physical demands of this job typically require full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and eye-hand coordination for operation and repair of all department equipment. Lifts and carries items weighing up to 50 pounds. Lifts and pushes patients in wheelchairs/stretchers weighing up to 300 pounds and places in appropriate positions for operation of equipment. Requires ability to reach above shoulder height. Requires sitting/standing for extensive periods of time. Requires corrected vision and hearing to normal range.
