Cove students come from 60 different public schools throughout the Northern Illinois area. Families can also choose to fund tuition privately. For over 75 years, The Cove School has been a national leader within its field, creating an exceptional environment where children with learning disabilities learn how to learn and develop the emotional and social skills to reach within, achieve above, exceed beyond, and maximize student growth. Classes are kept small. Teaching is flexible and varies according to the individual student's learning style. A team of onsite specialists work collaboratively to provide students intensive, integrated related services.Minimum Education: B.A./B.S.Certification: Valid Professional Educators License (PEL) (Teaching or Non-Teaching). Experience with Assistive Technology or Assistive Technology Certificate The Assistive Technology Specialist works directly with students and teams at The Cove School to develop, implement, and monitor Assistive Technology Services. The AT Specialist provides evaluation, data collection, modeling, and training to students, staff, and parents on the full continuum of technology support. The AT Specialist functions as a diagnostic team member and provides ongoing technical assistance to students, staff, and parents.
  • Preparation Skills
    • Evaluate the student's need for assistive technology
    • Develop individualized assistive technology recommendations for each student
    • Select and use methods, materials and equipment
    • Set up and maintain accurate records and data collection system (ie. Students performance data, time study) for the purpose of documenting accurate student information and reports
    • Knowledge of assistive technology supports and strategies to address academic needs (e.g. AT tools for reading, writing, communication, and executive functioning)
  • Implementation Skills
    • Exhibit knowledge of assistive technology to implement training
    • Be able to creatively problem solve for individual student needs
    • Explain, inform, demonstrate and coach students, staff, and parents
    • Assist parents and students in understanding the student's assistive technology needs, develop realistic expectations and help the student become an advocate for him/herself
    • Implement recommendations from student's home school
    • Be responsible for assistive technology equipment [tech team to be responsible for computer hardware and software]
  • Evaluation Skills
    • Interpret, integrate, and synthesize evaluative information to make individualized recommendations for Assistive Technology interventions and services for the purpose of providing access for students.
    • Evaluate and report on-going student progress and be able to use that data to fine tune recommendations for student needs.
    • Facilitate and conduct AT trial using SETT or other framework with team
    • Participate in parent conferences and student staffings, as needed
  • Teamwork
    • Consult and network with staff to assess assistive technology needs and implement training in the classroom
    • Assist/consult with staff on curriculum planning and program development
    • Educate staff on assistive technology and UDL
    • Act as a liaison between Cove School and district assistive technology teams to coordinate services to students
    • Participate in school committees
    • Maintain effective working relations with others
    • Be an integral part of Cove's technology team
    • Explore field relevant technology and assistive technologies for the purpose of identifying appropriate assistive technologies and keeping current with best practices and up to date tools.
  • Non-classroom responsibilities
    • Attend team meetings
    • Participate in school events: Field Trips, Parent Night, Parent Teacher Conferences, Project Fair, and Graduation
    • Attend faculty meetings
    • Meet with Supervisor monthly
  • Personal-Professional
    • Remain current on research and practices in assistive technology
    • Represent Cove School at local/national conferences
