Support and assist supervisor in running a controlled and organized activity for participants and parents. Under the direct supervision of the Athletics & Aquatics Supervisor, program aid is responsible for working directly with children. They play an integral role in the development of building strong character values in youth. The staff is a representative of the philosophy, mission, and goal of the City of McHenry and its parks and recreation department. Program Aids must strive to work cooperatively with the Athletics & Aquatics Supervisor, program instructor, and other recreational employees to achieve the goals and objectives of the City of McHenry Parks & Recreation department. Job DutiesDECISION MAKING AND JUDGEMENT
- Responsible for providing diverse program experiences for assigned group
- Delivering programs that are age-appropriate
- Be responsible for maintaining order and discipline within program
- Market programs to other departments & community organizations where youth are present
- Report any issues or concerns to program instructor and display mature behavior in front of participants and parents
- Assist other staff and follow/enforce policies set forth by supervisor
ADMINISTRATIVE
- Will be at your program area and set up 15 minutes prior to start of scheduled activities
- Help develop group schedules and implement new games/activities
- Be available for staff meetings, planning periods, and trainings as scheduled
- Keep program areas clean, neat, and organized to optimize customer satisfaction
- Maintain inventories and report any equipment problems or needs to the Athletics & Aquatics Supervisor
- Report any incidents to the Athletics & Aquatics Supervisor and fill out any necessary paperwork within 24 hours of incident
- Submit timesheets to Athletics & Aquatics Supervisor within 1 week of program ending.
SUPERVISION
- Responsible for youth ages 2-14 at your program area and will be responsible for youths overall well-being at all times while in the care of the City of McHenry Parks & Recreation department
- Keep accurate count of children in program at all times
PHYSICAL AND MENTAL REQUIREMENTS
- Must be motivated and able to implement oral and written instructions
- Must be able to communicate respectfully and effectively with superiors, co-workers, parents, and children ages 2-14
- Must be physically able to lift a child (if necessary)
- Must be able to evaluate situations and make decisions within established policies and standards
- Requires frequent lifting and moving of equipment and supplies
- Must be able to be participate in activities
- Knowledge and physical ability to respond in emergency situations
- Candidate must be energetic, outgoing, and interested in being a positive role model
- Candidate must possess ability to be flexible and adjust to changing work environment
- Candidate must possess creativity, initiative, and willingness to learn and implement new ideas
- Candidate must be trained and certified in First Aid and CPR/AED
ACCURACY
- Requires accurate record keeping for programs
PARTICIPANT SAFETY
- Review and understand all emergency drills and be prepared to implement them
- Requires considerable attention and alertness to safety hazards
PRINCIPLE ACTIVITIES:
- Fill in at various positions when there are personnel shortages, vacations, or special projects
- Other related duties as assigned and perform all duties in a respectful and responsible manner
- Adheres to all policies and procedures
Qualifications
- Must be 16 years of age or older
- Must be an example of good moral behavior
- Must have previous experience and knowledge with similar program and large/small group activities
- Supervise and facilitate youth programming activities to youth ages 2-14
- Basic First Aid and CPR/AED certification current or obtained before first shift
- Desire to work with children and parents daily
- Willingness to project the City of McHenry image by personal adherence to all policies
- Demonstrate the ability to interpret and administer all policies, established by the City of McHenry Parks & Recreation department, to all employees and volunteers
- Required at least 5 months working and/or volunteering with children ages 2-14
