All candidates must complete the Police Officer Standardized Post Test, or have passed the test within the past 12 months. GENERAL STATEMENT OF DUTIESOperates and maintains the 911 PSAP (Public Safety Answering Point) Communications Center for all emergency and non-emergency dispatching within the Center's jurisdiction; including police, fire and ambulance for Malheur County, City of Adrian, City of Ontario, City of Nyssa, City of Vale, City of Jordan Valley and all un-incorporated cities in Malheur County.Operates computers, two way radio, recorder, teletype and electronic equipment for the Malheur County Sheriff's Office 9-1-1 Center.Required to work rotating shifts, including days, evenings, nights, weekends and holidays. SUPERVISION RECEIVEDWorks under the direct supervision of the Emergency Management Lieutenant, and Dispatch Sergeant, who periodically reviews the work for adherence to the appropriate policies and standards. SUPERVISION EXERCISEDSupervision is not normally a responsibility of this position, although all Dispatchers may be responsible for training new staff. Essential FunctionsThe following description of duties may not be all inclusive and other duties may be assigned at the discretion of management.
  • Operates the Malheur County Sheriff's Office 9-1-1 Communications Center. Receives and transmits police, fire and ambulance calls and messages using two-way radios, pagers and telephones.
  • .Receives complaints, information, and requests for assistance from the public, law enforcement personnel, and other agencies, and takes action to dispatch assistance or otherwise resolves in a prescribed manner.
  • Receives calls for crimes in progress where the caller may be hysterical or upset, or other dramatic calls, and the dispatcher must be able to remain composed. Dispatchers will be expected to give specific, pre-planned medical instructions from prepared templates to callers to aid in medical emergencies before EMS can arrive.
  • Using a computer and teletype equipment, records information for the National Crime Investigations Center (NCIC), Law Enforcement Data System (LEDS) and the local Records Management System, for the Sheriff's Office, such as warrants, court documents and various reports. Operates and maintains proficient use of the Computer Aided Dispatch system (CAD).
  • Operates and assures maintenance of all equipment.
  • Performs other related duties as required.
  • Courteously meet and deal effectively with other employees, department heads, outside agency personnel and the public.
  • Multitasking is a daily routine of Dispatchers.
  • Regular physical attendance at the employer's facility is required.
  • QualificationsMinimum Qualifications to Apply:Age: 21Ability to Read/Speak EnglishEducation High School Grad/GEDMust pass or provide proof of passing the National Dispatcher Selection Test with an average score of 70 points.Vision: Must meet Department of Public Standards and Training requirements.Hearing: Must meet Department of Public Standards and Training Requirements. SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS-LICENSE OR CERTIFICATE REQUIREMENTSWithin one year of employment must earn and maintain DPSST Telecommunicator, Emergency Medical Dispatcher certification, and LEDS certifications. All applicants must be able to maintain a valid First Aid and CPR card. PREFERRED KNOWLEDGE AND SKILLS
    • Has at least 3 years of clerical computer skills.
    • Experience with communication and serving the public.
    • Demonstrated skill in typing with accuracy and speed.
    • Experience with telecommunications in a dispatch center setting.
    • Some knowledge of radio operations.
    • Some knowledge of multi-line phone systems.
    • Geographical knowledge of Malheur County
    • A combination of experience and training that demonstrates the ability to perform the duties of this position.
    • Preference points will be given to Bilingual
