Every employee takes a person-centered approach that exemplifies the ICARE values (Integrity, Compassion, Accountability, Respect, and Excellence) through empathic communication and partnerships between all persons.Work Shifts12:00 A.M - 8:00 A.MJob DescriptionPURPOSE OF POSITION:Under the general supervision of the Shift Supervisor, Assistant Director, Lab Director and Lab Administrator, this individual performs a full range of services, as assigned.AREAS OF RESPONSIBILITIESAll Laboratory areasSUMMARY OF DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Performs routine clinical testing laboratory areas where he/she is fully trained and in compliance with Federal, NYS DOH, CAP and TJC standards.
  • Complies with all laboratory established policies and procedures performed in the area of assignment, when testing patient samples from various sources.
  • Performs clinical laboratory tests, including specialized PCR tests for the diagnosis of infectious diseases and obtains data for use in diagnosis and treatment of diseases.
  • Understands the principles of and competently performs a variety of techniques in both manual and automated testing.
  • Works independently, organizing work to meet established deadlines; records and files all data obtained.
  • Provides guidance and technical training to clinical laboratory technologists and technicians assigned at Levels I and II, and other appropriate laboratory personnel. Coordinates, reviews and monitors their work; provides constructive feedback and suggestions on activities of subordinates to senior leadership.
  • Performs proficiency testing in the same manner as patient samples.
  • Follows KCH safety protocol at all times.
  • Demonstrates the ability to follow standard and complex scientific laboratory methods and procedures.
  • Participates in non-routine testing procedures in association with specialized research program(s); makes suggestions to procedures, techniques and tests as appropriate and required.
  • Reports critical value results promptly and documents them immediately as per KCH laboratory established guidelines.
  • Understands the principles of and competently performs a variety of techniques in both manual and automated testing; following KCHC laboratory's established policy and procedure guidelines.
  • Works independently, organizing work to meet established deadlines, records and files all data obtained.
  • Performs proficiency testing in the same manner as patient samples.
  • Follows KCHC safety protocol at all times.
  • Demonstrates ability to follow standard and complex scientific laboratory methods and procedures.
  • Participates in non-routine testing procedures in association with specialized research program(s); makes suggestions to minor modifications to procedures, techniques and tests, as appropriate or as required.
  • Reports critical value results promptly and documents the m immediately, as per KCHC laboratory's established guidelines.
  • May participate in or supervise the preparation, administration and rating of laboratory proficiency test programs.
CALIBRATIONS AND QUALITY CONTROLS/ QUALITY ASSURANCE
  • Analyzes all quality control materials and reviews data under the supervision of a clinical lab technologist level IV.Complies with all quality control rules as per KCHC laboratory's established guidelines.Takes corrective action when necessary.
  • Documents activities as necessary.
  • Enters and retrieves patient data accurately, utilizing the laboratory information system (LIS).
PREVENTIVE MAINTENANCE
  • Performs preventive maintenance.
  • Documents activities as required.
  • Performs troubleshooting techniques for major instruments when applicable.
  • Corrects problems or notifies the supervisor immediately.
  • Documents all corrective actions taken.
OTHER FACTORS
  • Attends, participates in and evaluates continuing education and in-service education.
  • Is aware of, contributes to and observes laboratory safety at all times.
  • Maintains strict patient confidentiality (HIPAA) at all times.
  • Participates in the development, evaluation and implementation of new methods and equipment if requested.
  • Demonstrates knowledge of clinical laboratory terminology.
  • Demonstrates knowledge in the area of specialty.
  • Prepares labels, packages and standardizes laboratory media, reagents, controls and specimens for use in analysis.
  • Prepares work orders for laboratory repairs
  • Completes all required documentation and reporting in accordance with departmental and other regulatory guidelines.
  • Assists in developing and revising laboratory policies and procedures.
  • Designs and maintains charts, logs and other records.
  • May prepare correspondence and narrative /statistical reports.
WORK AIDES
  • Includes the safe use and handling of toxic, infectious, fumes electrical and other bio-hazardous substances.

Minimum Qualifications1. Valid license as a clinical laboratory technologist, cytotechnologist, or histotechnologist issued by the NYSED.In addition to meeting the qualification requirement of Assignment Level II, appointment to Level III requires:1.
