Major Responsibilities:

  • The position is responsible for independently managing, analyzing, scheduling, and facilitation of supply of components that support the production and service of equipment at the assigned site. The incumbent is the direct link between supply of materials for the assigned sites production, working alongside quality, service, finance and engineering organizations.

  • Manage the entire production life cycle through facilitating current shortages, engineering changes and customer changes to support machine and component on time start and on time completion to customer commit date.

  • Facilitate assigned assembly plant meetings to review current production schedule, current component assemblies and future planned schedule for the facility as the single point of contact between Operations and Supply Chain.

  • Analyze and identify changes in scope of work for assembly plant and suppliers during contract reviews and project management meetings on high-profile and newly released engineered machines and components.

  • Review current supply chain capacity to support proposed late customer and/or engineering changes in collaboration with Contracts Management, Engineering and Operations regarding acceptance.

  • Participate and/or facilitate in cross-functional meetings to support global requirements of parts, components and/or projects. Review the critical parts list requirements with Procurement (Buyers & MRPC's) to expedite/confirm delivery. Report-out on weekly Production calls on action taken.

  • Facilitate and/or establish cross-functional teams, as required, to develop local supplier(s) to further support the specific production facility schedule.

  • Collaborate with the buyer(s) and material planners the establishment of stocking programs to support operations.

  • Elevate with Planning and Provisioning personnel the need for additional and/or adjusted planning on components or products that show historical fluctuations in demand. This includes, but is not limited to AIO/OE Planning BOM Review, Lead Time Reviews & Long Lead Parts Reviews.

  • Identify and initiate cost improvement activities to provide the company with the best total cost of ownership value. Participate in Business Transformation/Tiger Team/Projects related to Sites (Velocity, Data Intergrity, ATO, etc.)

  • The business system is used fully to maximize utilization and efficiency. Additionally investigate, analyze, and recommend streamlined process improvements.

  • Provide supervision and mentoring to other Supply Chain personnel to improve their skills in Purchasing techniques and strategies, and to encourage/champion initiatives.

  • Ability to independently create training documentation and facilitate training sessions.

Nature of Position

Komatsu Mining Corp. produces machinery and systems for the extraction of underground mineral deposits. The position is responsible for independently managing, analyzing, scheduling, and facilitation of procuring of commodity group or groups, (raw materials, components, fabrications, finished goods, supplies, and services) that support the production and service of this equipment. The incumbent is the direct link between the materials, production, quality, service, finance and engineering organizations within the company. Externally, the incumbent is the face of Komatsu Mining Corp. to the global supply base.

Relationships

This position requires substantial interface with global peers, management, and director level positions at various Komatsu locations. The position will interact on a regular basis with the senior management of the supplier base. These interactions require the incumbents to identify Komatsu needs and conduct negotiations with suppliers to assure those needs are represented. Global travel to supplier facilities could be an integral part of this position.

Background

This position requires the equivalent of a bachelor's degree in Business or Engineering plus five to ten years experience in an industrial procurement organization. The position requires a broad and in-depth knowledge of purchasing, manufacturing, materials and inventory management, quality, information systems, finance, and engineering drawings. The incumbent must possess solid decision-making skills, strong analytical skills, and demonstrate critical-thinking abilities. Working knowledge of integrated business systems is required to effectively execute the responsibilities of the position. The position also requires a level of understanding of the mining industry to effectively support operations and identify threats, weaknesses, opportunities and strengths in the supply base and to manage those factors to the best overall company advantage. The incumbent must also possess a high level of computer skills including office automation and business systems. The position also requires the business acumen to understand supply chain concepts and how they impact the bottom line.

Predominate Tasks

  • Supplier and customer management:

  • Arrange, prepare, and facilitate meetings with assembly locations, engineering, quality, contract management and suppliers monthly, quarterly & per fiscal year requirements.

  • Decision to find and/or finding alternative sources, alternate material/parts, engineering workarounds, or airfreight to meet MESD.

  • Negotiate supply and delivery agreements.

  • Perform technical analysis of suppliers' equipment, materials, and services to determine suitability.

  • Perform and manage risk analysis.

  • Review shortage report with Sites to determine MESD, Lead actions on major pacing items with the larger organization. Ensure pacing items cover the entire machine & P&C FY22 requirements.

  • Assure that intellectual and other proprietary property information is kept in the strictest confidence when interacting with the supply base.

  • Contact and develop new sources of supply as required to meet organization needs.

  • Review and agree Dual Sourcing with procurement teams

  • Decision to find and/or finding alternate source, alternate material / parts, engineering workarounds or Airfreight to meet MESD

  • Facilitate resolution of receiving issues with location and buyer support.

  • Work with buyers and suppliers to maintain/improve on-time machine shipment metrics.

  • Work with Sites on global allocation, select repair scope, global supply chain issues, etc. related to supply

  • Especially on pacing items, start identifying the Priority Table effect for any deliveries in short-, medium term to avoid misses to customer & RBP orders. Follow to completion

  • Project manage all the major componenent that can / will negatively impact MESD or FA assy

  • Work with suppliers to maintain/improve departmental metrics.

  • Facilitate rework or return of product to support on-time machine shipments with quality, supplier and buyer.

  • Escalate to next levels where absolutely necessary, but ahead of FA start date to allow for any other delays.

  • Ensure that all purchases comply with Komatsu/Government regulations and accepted trade practices.

  • Explore, investigate, recommend, forecast and implement cost improvement ideas.

  • Work with sites to load SERVICE ORDERS in advance, even if it is a generic service order

  • Agree with Sites on machine push-outs or pull-ins based on parts deliveries

  • System-related management:

  • Benchmark best practices within assembly plants.

  • Interface between engineering and supply base to resolve issues of ambiguous specifications, material shortages or substitutions.

  • Analyze and manage all machine and purchased component shortages to improve on time delivery as well as on time machine shipments.

  • Investigate, recommend and implement inventory control and reduction ideas for individual assembly plants with buyer and supplier assistance.

  • Create a process to control the repeat parts shortage offenders
