Salary: $46,933.00 AnnuallyLocation : New Bern, NCJob Type: Full-TimeJob Number: DSDepartment: Sheriff's OfficeOpening Date: 03/17/2023Closing Date: ContinuousPrimary PurposePerforms general duty law enforcement work in protecting the lives, property, and rights of citizens in the County. Employees in this class perform a variety of law enforcement duties in the areas of patrol, criminal and civil paper processing, community policing, crime prevention, and community service, school safety, and search and rescue. Work includes patrolling a geographic region within the County during a shift in a patrol car; preventing, detecting and investigating disturbances and crime; helping victims; performing traffic control work and criminal interdiction, serving as K-9 officer, apprehending suspects; testifying in court; and executing related assignments. Duties also include serving criminal court papers such as warrants and subpoenas, as well as receiving and serving civil process papers such as civil summons and executions. Essential Functions
  • Patrols a geographic region of the County to detect and deter crime; responds to calls for assistance; conducts preliminary investigations of crimes and complaints; transports prisoners and mental patients; detects unusual conditions; and may maintain surveillance and observation for stolen cars, missing persons, or suspects.
  • Responds to calls for assistance, complaints, suspicious activity, domestic disputes, loud and disruptive behavior, and other needs; completes calls by determining true nature of the situation and takes whatever legal or persuasive action is warranted.
  • Serves criminal papers such as warrants, subpoenas, notices of hearing, order of forfeiture, and commitment papers; locates people to serve papers, explains briefly the meaning of the papers being served, and makes arrests when necessary.
  • Serves civil process papers such as civil summons, magistrate summons, notice of rights, subpoenas, and court orders dealing with child support, child custody, and domestic violence; explains briefly the meaning of papers served and remains on the scene after serving certain papers until the civil process is completed.
Minimum Education and ExperienceCompletion of high school and some law enforcement training or experience preferred; possession of a Basic Law Enforcement Training Certificate; or an equivalent combination of education and experience. Before assignment to sworn duties, employee must possess a valid North Carolina driver's license and have completed requirements established by the North Carolina Justice Sheriff Training and Standards Council for certified law enforcement officers. Additional Information
  • Performs Interstate Highway Interdiction by monitoring traffic moving through the County for speed control, driver's safety, safety inspections of trucks, possible alcohol or drug violations, and any or all NC motor vehicle laws.
  • Performs investigations of accidents and crimes through observation, questioning witnesses, and gathering physical evidence; performs investigative tasks assigned by Detective, arrests and processes criminal suspects.
  • Serves in a community policing role, provides community security, attends local government meetings, stays abreast of community affairs and serves as security liaison and contact regarding law enforcement matters.
  • Advises the public on laws and local ordinances; provides information to general public. Regulates and directs vehicular traffic at busy times or when traffic signal malfunction or accidents require; maintains order at public gatherings.
  • Operates a radio to receive instructions and information from or to report information.
  • Performs related duties as required.
  • Required to serve during times of disaster.

Once eligibility requirements are met, employees will be able to receive monthly payments for life based on their salary, age, and years of service credit.NC401kThe County contributes 5% of eligible employees' gross salary into the 401(k) account regardless of the employee's deferral amount.Annual LeaveRegular full-time employees earn annual leave based upon years of service. Eligible employees begin to accrue annual leave as soon as they start but must complete a six month probationary period before they are eligible to use annual leave.
  • Less than two years of service earns 10 days per year.
  • Two but less than five years of service earns 12 days per year.
  • Five but less than 10 years of service earns 15 days per year.
  • 10 but less than 20 years of service earns 18 days per year.
  • 20 or more years of service earns 20 days per year.
Sick LeaveRegular full-time employees earn 3.69 hours of sick leave per pay period. Craven County accepts eligible sick leave from the State of North Carolina, any of its political subdivisions, any local government entity or authority, or municipality in North Carolina.Paid HolidaysCounty employees receive 11-14 paid holidays annually. The Board of County Commissioners may adjust the holiday schedule as deemed necessary.LongevityEligible employees earn $200 in longevity after five years of service by October 31 of the qualifying year. Longevity benefits increase $25 per year up to a maximum of $1,000.Merit ProgramCraven County offers a merit program. Up to 56% of eligible employees may receive a performance-based merit increase each year.Supplemental BenefitsCounty employees are also offered a variety of supplemental benefits to select at their own expense such as Life Insurance, Vision Insurance, Flexible Spending Accounts, Critical Care policies, Cancer policies, Long-term Care policies, Hospitalization policies, 457b Deferred Compensation Plan and Aflac, Employee benefits are subject to change or may be contingent upon funding availability.
