POSITION TITLE: Office of Policy Analysis & International RelationsHOURS: 40 hours per weekTERM: 10 WeeksDATES: May 22- August 25LOCATION: Washington, DCTYPE OF ROLE: Office of Policy Analysis & International RelationsOur client is looking for a forward-looking, proactive, and collaborative Student Intern residing in Washington DC for an onsite position.REQUIREMENT: A full-time student enrolled in an HBCU, PBI, or MI, have at least a 3.0 GPA, be a U.S. Citizen, and be willing to work in-person onsite in D.C.POSITION SUMMARY:This position is located in the Office of Policy Analysis & International Relations (OPAIR) and consists of the Policy Analysis Division and the International Relations Division.
  • The Policy Analysis Division is responsible for EXIM's policy analysis, program design, and evaluation.
  • The International Relations Division is responsible for EXIM's involvement in and relationships with the international organizations, associations, and regulatory bodies that affect official export credits (e.g. OECD, Berne Union, G7/12/20, and WTO).
This position serves in the capacity of a student trainee. Performs duties under the supervision of a higher-graded employee who gives instructions as to the objectives and results to be obtained and is available for guidance as to methods and procedures to be followed during the progress of the assignment. The incumbent receives tailored instruction, guidance, training, and supervision designed to provide the knowledge and skills necessary for the successful performance of their duties.The incumbent will receive on-the-job training that is intended to enhance the individual's technical competencies. Work assignments are made commensurate with the college curriculum. The incumbent accomplishes assignments requiring a professional knowledge of principles, theories, and methods of advanced mathematics, statistics, logic, econometrics, and other operations research techniques and procedures with substantial competence in mathematics and statistics.YOUR EXPECTATIONS:These are some of the winning behaviors you'll need for success; in this role, you will:
  • Performs research on market conditions related to the portfolio of issues to help update the Chinese export credit database.
  • This research can entail using electronic, written, or verbal sources and may make use of general information, reports, surveys, and discussions with experts on the topic.
  • The research will include the use of quantitative, qualitative, and financial data, including data available from the EXIM Reporting System (ERS) to develop information, tables, and Excel spreadsheets on EXIM programs and policies within the context of broader macroeconomic trends.
  • Presenting findings in a capstone presentation to OPAIR staff and other senior leaders
  • Monitors and prepares analytical reports on trends in EXIM policies that are the subject of Congressional inquiry, OECD negotiations, Berne Union discussion, and/or other domestic and/or international stakeholder questions.
  • Prepares relevant reports on EXIM stakeholders (e.g., exporters, commercial banks, brokers), gathering necessary data from internal and/or external sources, evaluating the quality/integrity of the data, and creating easy-to-understand analytical formats for presenting the data.
  • Analyzing Chinese initiatives (e.g. One Belt, One Road, and Made in China 2025) and their potential implications for EXIM Bank and U.S. exporters.
  • Works in close coordination with supervisor, and engage, as needed, on strategic and competitive policy issues.
  • Specifically, it reviews policy briefs, data, and information provided by various USG agencies that would be relevant to EXIM's Competitiveness Report, China-related research and data collection efforts, various export credit policy reviews, and other interagency initiatives, as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE REQUIRED:These are some of the required skills and experiences you'll need for success in this role:
  • The ability to carry out research in both English and Chinese is highly preferred.
  • Knowledge related to the analysis of finance or international trade (e.g., finance, business administration, economics, accounting, insurance, engineering, mathematics, banking and credit, law, real estate operations, statistics, public policy, international trade, etc.).
  • Knowledge of program and policy analysis, using a variety of quantitative, qualitative, and financial data, to conduct studies that equip decision-makers with knowledge and insight into the issue at hand to facilitate the establishment of programs and policies that are responsive to both the mission of EXIM and the needs of the commercial marketplace.
  • Knowledge of economic, public, and U.S. trade policy principles which underlie the policies of the institution and of EXIM's policies and procedures.
  • Awareness of EXIM programs, including the processes involved in loan, guarantee, and insurance transactions, forms a baseline for evaluation.
  • Knowledge of attributes of financial data, including the ability to provide the context of data to meet management reporting needs.
  • Knowledge of international banking processes and operations.
  • Excellent oral and written communication skills, including the ability to explain issues and problems.
  • Skill to analyze, evaluate, and determine the basis of findings to propose solutions to problems.
  • Ability to use various software and data tools, including Microsoft Office and specifically Microsoft Excel, to develop and refine analytical information.
  • Knowledge and understanding of international banking systems and operations, information processing, management information reporting, data quality evaluation, data reconciliation, EXIM programs, policies, credit standards, functional interrelationships, and procedures.
  • Skill in attention to detail, organizational and analytical skills, and the ability and initiative to understand new and alternative processes to improve accuracy and efficiency are essential qualities for the performance of the duties and responsibilities of this position.
