Principal Scientist, Consumer Science Self Care

This position reports into the R&D Consumer Science Manager and is based at Summit, NJ.

What will you do

The Principal Scientist will work within the Consumer Science team as part of an end-to-end R&D organization to support the development of products for the category. You will be responsible for consumer research to support multiple brands such as TYLENOL, MOTRIN, ZYRTEC, BENADRYL, and ZARBEES as well as upstream innovation. You will work to foster a consumer-centric culture within the R&D organization to build deep consumer empathy through effective communication and collaboration with cross-functional partners. In addition to traditional methodologies, you will innovate capabilities using agile digital research tools, data science/advanced analytics, and modeling techniques to meet key project and program objectives.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategy and design for exploratory qualitative and quantitative research, product design and optimization research, benchmarking studies, and consumer perceived claims validation studies aligned with project teams using modern consumer science research methods.
  • Responsible for representation of Consumer Science on multiple cross-disciplinary project teams and provide guidance on consumer learning plans.
  • Effectively communicate the voice of the consumer to the full project team.
  • Drive collaboration and communication with internal and external partners for flawless execution of Consumer Science projects.
  • Coordinate and/or supervise the execution of Consumer Science studies and act as liaison with research vendors.
  • Participate in analysis and interpretation of results and communication to project teams; work with data science to enhance the value of studies.
  • Monitor Consumer Science activities against multiple project plans and need states.
  • Participate in Consumer Science community of practice to support a consumer-centric culture in the R&D organization.
  • Identify new methodologies/approaches/advanced methods or improve current qualitative and/or quantitative approaches to improve effectiveness and efficiency in Consumer Science.
  • Ensure all activities are conducted in accordance with high ethical/quality standards and all applicable policies and procedures.

What we are looking for

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor's degree with at least 6+ years or Master's degree with 4-6 years or PhD degree with 2+ years of industry and/or relevant work experience in qualitative and quantitative research in Consumer Science, Sensory Science, or Market Research is required.
  • Strong knowledge of qualitative, quantitative and/or sensory consumer sciences is required.
  • Solid understanding of research methods relevant to Consumer Science and/or Product Development with experience documenting and interpreting data is required.
  • Strong analytical thinking and communication skills and the ability to work independently is required.
  • Experienced in leading consumer research in the cosmetic/OTC class of consumer products is preferred.
  • Experience with data science is preferred.
  • Ability to operate independently to drive internal and external relationships.
  • Ability to take measured risks and make well-informed decisions to drive project progress.
