Chief Financial Officer – Full-Time Exempt. Gillen Brewer School (GBS) seeks an experienced, strategically-oriented financial and business leader to fill the key position of Chief Financial Officer. The CFO reports to the Head of School and works with the Board of Trustees, senior administrators, and staff for a thriving educational environment that serves up to 82 special needs students and their families. GBS was founded in 1992 as a school for children ages 3 to 10 who have a wide variety of language-based and non-verbal learning disabilities. To provide an integrated educational and therapeutic program for the variety and depth of our students' special needs, GBS has a large, dedicated faculty including teachers, occupational therapists, speech pathologists, and psychologists.

The CFO will work in close partnership with the Head of School and Assistant Head of School in support of the school's mission and strategic plans. The CFO will supervise the Controller, Director of Human Resources, School Counsel, and Director of Technology and Facilities. This extended Business Office Team is responsible for the organization and management of comprehensive business, financial, and operational initiatives for the school. The CFO will be charged with the implementation and integration of cross-organizational database systems and protocols to ensure alignment and operational efficiency. Internally, the CFO is a thought partner with the Head of School, a liaison to the Board's Executive and Finance Committees, and will play an integral role in developing and executing strategic plans. The successful candidate must be a creative problem-solver and change agent who possesses high levels of operational expertise.

Responsibilities include but are not limited to the following:

  • Oversee and assist in managing 60 employees with 4 direct reports.
  • Produce and supervise the audit of all budgets, financial statements, and reports.
  • Provide the faculty and staff with a user-friendly Business and HR function.
  • Create procedures/processes that ensure legal compliance and best practices.
  • Continue analysis of Building and Technology systems to ensure safe and efficient use.
  • Support the Enrollment, Admissions, Marketing, and Development leadership.
  • Assist the Head of School and Board in data analysis, problem-solving, and decision-making.
  • Act as fiduciary to GBS financial and other resources.
  • Officer of the School in regard to all business accounts, contracts, and investments.
  • Contribute to strategic planning, master planning, and capital campaign processes.
  • Oversee benchmark analysis of tuition and staff salaries.
  • Oversee risk management function and purchase of insurance.
  • Maintain a user-friendly financial modeling system.
  • Oversee the investment portfolio of the school's endowment assets.
  • Present financial insight to build trust among faculty and staff, trustees, and parents.
  • Professional Requirements:

  • 5-8 years of managerial level work experience in a not-for-profit, business leadership position (Independent School preferred).
  • Bachelor's degree (required), MBA (preferred).
  • Must include experience with supervising staff, budgeting, risk management, investment management, human resources and benefits, facilities management, and contract negotiation.
  • Requires thorough knowledge of generally accepted accounting principles and strong background in financial systems, modeling, and forecasting.
  • Experience and proficiency with sophisticated school-wide data management systems is much preferred -- with Veracross experience, especially so.
  • MS Office expertise is essential.
