Job Description :
This is an advanced level Field Services position. The Commercial Fiber Technician must have the ability to perform fiber optic splicing at customer premises as well as troubleshoot problems using test gear including the OTDR, power meters, fiber scopes, VFLs and others. This person must be well organized, knowledge of construction practices for Outside Plant cable placement and sufficient experience with computers to update and document work orders, obtain information from internal systems and conduct end testing such as speed tests. The person must have telecommunications experience and the ability to travel as required, including overnight travel and maintenance. Responsibilities for this role include customer premise and curb fiber splicing including extending customer demarcation points, resolving inside wiring and central office wiring issues and testing all completed spices. Commercial Fiber Technicians are expected to work closely with the Outside Plant team and the Service Delivery Coordinators to ensure the delivery due dates are met. This person reports directly to the Field Services Supervisor.ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include the following. Other duties may be assigned. Work with engineers and/or OSP PM's to deploy fiber optic services to commercial customers. Serve as a resource to the internal staff on matters concerning splicing practices and procedures Provide detailed documentation of work performed and equipment installed. Troubleshoot problems with delivery of service including fiber optic, copper and coaxial transmission lines. Communicate with supervisor and Service Delivery Coordinators on workload status in order to meet designated goals Maintain fiber asset inventory and installation records. Maintains written installation procedures Manage multiple projects at one time Works with customer service staff and customer, to resolve issues Handles questions and concerns presented by customers and vendors Maintain a positive attitude and strong work ethic that can provide high productivity with minimal supervision Completes tasks and work orders on time, accurately updating notesBasic Technical Duties Ability to fusion or mechanical splice SM or MM fiber optic cables, to include terminate various types of fiber optic connectors (ST, SC, LC) Know how to pull cable and have knowledge of cable standards, closet build outs and building/fire codes Installation and testing of fiber optic services in many different building types. Experience and knowledge using Fiber Optic Scope and or a Fiber OTDR Installation and dressing of fiber optic cables (vertical/horizontal) Intermediate to advanced understanding of telecommunications fundamentals Installation of cabling at customer premise Ability to terminate all Telco mediums (twisted pair, cable, coax and fiber to BISCII standards) Know how to terminate and repair various optical connections Tests all services and products after installation Must be able to pass a background check for Collocation accessRequirementsEDUCATION and/or EXPERIENCE: Must have 1+ years of communications experience. High School/GED/Some College Preferred or equivalent; or 3-6 years of related experience and /or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
