The Safety Specialist develops, implements, and directs programs that maintain compliance with Federal, State, and municipal regulars associated with environmental health and safety; is the subject matter expert on environmental health and safetyissues; Works with other members of the health system to ensure that hospital and departmental practices reflect current standards in environmental health and safety.

ESSENTIAL KEY JOB RESPONSIBILITIES1. Develop, design, and implement educational programs for all employees to ensure compliance with environmental health and safety standards/regulations.

2. Conduct and evaluate employee fire response by initiating fire drills at frequencies established by accrediting and regulating agencies.

3. Participates in safety Rounds including Environment of Care Rounds and Tracer Rounds as assigned.

4. Perform safety monitoring including chemical exposure monitoring, coordinating chemical waste disposal, monitoring confined space entries, and evaluating emergency preparedness drills.

5. Assists in the monitoring of environmental health and safety compliance through development and review of hospital policies/procedure associated with environmental health and safety.

6. Work in conjunction with Occupational Health to review accident reports for trends and unsafe conditions or actions that warrant intervention, and conduct additional investigation as needed.

7. Coordinates with Capital Projects, Facilities Engineering, Infection Control and contractors to access and document construction related safety issues including risk assessments, permits and building shutdowns.

8. Working familiarity with local, state and federal regulations and regulatory agencies to include Fire Department, Department of State Health Services, Texas Commission on Environmental Quality, EPA, OSHA, etc.

Required Education and Experience:

  • Bachelor's Degree
  • Two (2) years of related work experience
  • Preferred: GSP or ASP with Hospital, Life Safety, Hazardous Waste, Hosting committees experience.
