Assistant/Associate Professor in the Philosophy of SportThe Department of Kinesiology in the College of Health and Human Development at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park, is seeking a full-time faculty member to contribute to our program in the History and Philosophy of Sport. We are looking for a critical scholar of sport with a particular interest in research that reflects the domains of philosophy and ethics broadly defined. This is a tenure-track position to begin July 2025 at the Assistant or Associate Professor level.The candidate would be joining an internationally respected History and Philosophy of sport program within one of the leading Kinesiology departments in the country. The successful candidate will have the opportunity to work with faculty in the Rock Ethics Institute, the Center for the Study of Sport in Society, the Bioethics Program, the Humanities Institute, the Consortium on Moral Decision-Making, the Center for Socially Responsible AI, the Sustainability Institute, and the McCourtney Institute for Democracy. Other potential collaborators within the department include scholars in exercise physiology, biomechanics, exercise psychology, neuroscience, and motor control, as well as scholars in other parts of the University, including, but not limited to, nutritional sciences, prevention science, child and adolescent development, and sport-related communication, among other units.Key Qualifications of the Candidate
  • Candidates seeking the rank of Assistant Professor will have an earned doctorate in Kinesiology, Philosophy, History, Sport Studies, Women, Gender and Sexuality Studies, American Studies or other Area Studies, or a related field with evidence of interest and experience in the application of philosophy and critical studies to sport prior to beginning at Penn State.
  • Candidates at the rank of Associate Professor or Professor must also demonstrate an established record of excellence suitable for appointment with tenure at the Pennsylvania State University.
  • The candidate must have teaching and research interests in the social and cultural aspects of sport, with a preference for a focus on philosophy and ethics.
  • The candidate will have a track record or promising trajectory of scholarly publications, as well as a demonstrated ability or potential to publish in top academic journals and/or with leading book publishers in the field.
  • The candidate must show evidence of a clear, well-developed, and viable strategy for future outstanding research with the potential to result in world-leading scholarship.
  • The candidate must show evidence of appropriate teaching and mentorship commensurate with rank.
  • The candidate must be committed to working as part of a team and be a highly engaged teacher at the undergraduate and graduate levels.
