This internship will be based in Philadelphia, PA or Washington, DC and begin in the Spring of 2025. The hours and exact start and end dates are flexible to fit the intern's academic calendar. Please visit www.thefire.org to gain a sense of our work and mission.Position Description FIRE is looking for passionate, team-oriented, and driven undergraduates (rising juniors, and seniors) or graduate students attending colleges and universities in the United States to join our fast-paced and exciting work environment defending the First Amendment and a culture of free speech. Working at the headquarters of a national nonprofit, the student will be immersed in the general activities of the Communications department while learning about your right to free expression from professional free speech advocates.ResponsibilitiesFIRE seeks an energetic undergraduate or graduate Communications intern to help us inform millions of Americans about their free speech rights and what FIRE is doing to help protect them. The Communications Intern's responsibilities may include:
  • Writing and copy editing a diverse array of external communications materials - news articles, marketing content, social media language, YouTube descriptions, and other content.
  • General research and fact-checking for the Communications department and its editorial, social media, video, public relations, and marketing materials.
  • Finding and capturing media, including videos, photos, and articles for videos on cases and free speech news with FIRE's video editors.
  • Assist in the daily operations of various social media channels (YouTube, TikTok, Facebook, Instagram, X, and LinkedIn) and ad platforms, including Google Ads, Meta, and TikTok.
  • General intern duties such as answering phones, managing the general FIRE inbox, assisting with inventory management, and office management.
Qualifications A successful candidate will have:
  • An understanding of and enthusiasm for FIRE's mission.
  • Excellent copy editing skills and a strong eye for detail.
  • Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
  • Excellent computer skills (Mac) including knowledge of the Google/Gmail platform.
  • An interest in learning more about Communications, particularly writing and editing copy across multiple media formats and digital platforms, and learning basic video editing skills.
  • The ability to work independently.
Preferred Qualifications
  • Experience working on a student newspaper is a plus.
  • Knowledge of AP Style is a plus.
  • Previous experience working for a nonprofit.
  • Student leadership experience.
Students will be evaluated at regular intervals. Highly successful candidates may be invited back for future intern experiences or may be offered a part-time position, however, further employment is not guaranteed.
