SCHOOL/DEPARTMENT: Transportation DepartmentTYPE: Classified STATUS: Non-Exempt SALARY: ($14.35, 9 month position, No Benefit Package) WORK CALENDAR: 181 Days, 3 Hours Per Day START DATE: August 2023REPORTS TO: Director of TransportationDEFINITION: Under close supervision, oversees the safety and comfort of disabled and other students riding the bus and crossing the street, and assists school bus drivers in maintaining appropriate behavior on bus for Somerton School District No. 11.ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:(Essential functions, as defined under the Americans with Disabilities Act, may include the following tasks, knowledge, skills and other characteristics. This list of tasks is ILLUSTRATIVE ONLY, and is not a comprehensive listing of all functions and tasks performed by positions in this class).SPECIFIC DUTIES/TASKS INCLUDE:
  • Provides assistance to students to get on and off the bus.
  • Ensures that seat belts and other safety restraining devices are in use and securely fastened.
  • Moves school crossing signs into and out of street.
  • Assists children crossing street.
  • Utilizes proper hand signs as required.
  • Adheres to regulations and guidelines governing school crossings.
  • Ensures safety of pedestrians using assigned cross walks.
  • Reports problems with students or traffic.
  • Assists the school bus driver in maintaining orderly student conduct on the bus.
  • Monitors student behavior.
  • Ensures students are safely seated.
  • Enforces discipline on buses transporting students.
  • Reports violations.
  • Prepares reports of violations and incidents.
  • May assist students on and off bus.
  • Attends safety classes and performs related duties as assigned.
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND OTHER CHARACTERISTICS:
  • Knowledge of school bus rules and regulations.
  • Knowledge of District disciplinary procedures related to school bus activities.
  • Knowledge of appropriate safety precautions.
  • Knowledge of traffic regulations pertaining to school and pedestrian crossings.
  • Knowledge of traffic control devices.
  • Skill in preparing violation and incident reports.
  • Skill in working with disabled and other students.
  • Skill in following oral and written instructions.
  • Skill in establishing and maintaining effective working relationships.
PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
  • Work is performed in indoor and outdoor environments.
  • Work requires frequent standing, walking, bending and lifting up to 25 pounds.
  • May be exposed to traffic, extreme weather conditions and infectious diseases.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School Diploma or equivalent preferred.
  • Must possess CPR and First Aid certification.
  • Fingerprint Clearance Card (IVP) required at the time of hiring.
  • Additional certifications may also be required as specified by the District.
