Job DetailsJob LocationBMH Danville Clinic - Danville, WVPosition TypeFull TimeDescriptionSummary The Security Guard is responsible for sustaining and effective support structure by assisting with the security functions of Boone Memorial Hospital (BMH). Under the general supervision of the Maintenance Director, the Security staff is responsible for the effective planning, direction and coordination of the security at BMH to meet the hospitals operating needs.Essential FunctionsReasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform these essential functions.The Security Guard is expected to perform the following essential functions:
- Make all security rounds as assigned. Check all locks on outside buildings.
- Verify all Doctors offices and other hospital owned buildings are secure all times. Checked on a regular basis.
- Check parking lot and public use areas for adequate lighting, obstructions, debris and abandoned vehicles.
- Report all safety hazards immediately including trip hazards, electrical and exterior lighting. Address safety hazards immediately whenever possible. Hazardous lights, exterior lighting and health net lights must be operational at all times. These are to be handled by the security guard and replaced immediately. If no replacement light is available, notify your supervisor in writing by the end of each shift.
- Document nightly guard report in detail. Written reports are filed with the Chief Operating Officer and Safety Officer on a daily basis for unusual problems, hazards or safety concerns.
- Required to be aware of fire evacuation procedures and be able to assist with evacuation plan when needed.
- Guard must react, carry out and dispose of any and all security threats to the hospital in a professional and tactful manner. The use force is to always be the last resort.
- Must be able to control situations that arise with patients, employees, visitors, etc. with skill, tack and authority.
- Be helpful, respectful and courteous to staff, patients, visitors and clinical staff.
- Responsible for ensuring that all unnecessary lights and water valves are off and all doors are secure during non-operational hours.
- Must be able to control situations that arise with patients, employees, visitors, etc. with skill, tack and authority.
- Notify police department when you feel that a situation is getting out of control and their assistance is needed. Never try to handle situations on your own.
- Must know the proper chain of command and contact personnel of the hospital to call in case of unusual circumstances.
- Avoid staying in any specific work area for long periods of time which may prevent fellow employees from completing their assigned duties. Never interfere or deter other staff from working. Remain focused on your job.
- Wear approved uniform and ID Badge AT ALL TIMES during your working shift.
- Assist with snow, other debris and flood removal, when necessary, from all sidewalks, walkways, road ways and parking areas. Immedicably notify maintenance personnel in the event of unusual weather than requires their assistance in maintaining a safe environment for the pubic, patients and visitors.
- Walk any employee to their vehicle if they feel unsafe or insecure upon requested.
- Assist patients who are unable to walk to their vehicle by themselves.
- Assist in other areas of the hospital when needed such as x-ray, emergency room, unloading and loading of patients, etc.
- Ensure that all employees have their Parking Sticker in their vehicle. Notify supervisor when someone is non-compliant with parking sticker policy. Will be required to ensure that all hospital/clinic employees are compliant with parking in designated employee parking only areas.
- Always have available the maintenance director and other emergency contact personnel telephone numbers/cell phone/home in the event of an emergency.
- Always give proper notice when unable to work to allow time to cover your shift. The hospital must provide 24/7 security coverage. If you must leave your shift due to illness or emergency- you must have relief personnel on site before you leave the premises. You must first notify your supervisor and request someone to relieve you of your duties before you leave the premises. You are contact your supervisor first when requesting a day off, partial shift or leave your shift due to illness or family emergency.
- Loafing, bicycles and skateboards are not allowed on hospital grounds. Ask violators to stop immediately. If they do not comply, contact the police.
- Maintain the chain of communications with your immediate supervisor and the maintenance department. If you have any questions or suggestions that may improve safety & security of the hospital grounds, patients and staff, do not hesitate to submit your recommendation to our supervisor, the COO or Chief Nursing Officer.
- Security Guards are responsible to prepare the grounds for any landing and departure of the Health Flight helicopter, including preparation of the lights for landing, removal of automobiles in the landing area and maintain the security of the landing zone before, during and after a health flight call is initiated.
- Guards are responsible for remaining aware of any alarm that may be sounding from any department. You must then call appropriate personnel for corrective action, i.e., blood bank alarms and refrigerator temperature alarms, fire alarms, etc.
- Other duties as may be assigned or revised to ensure the safety and security of Boone Memorial Hospital, Inc.
- Maintaining a good working relationship with all departments, employees and providers is imperative to ensure that the staff are confident you are ready to react properly in any emergency situation that requires your assistance.
QualificationsRequired Skills, Qualifications, and Competencies
- Ability to communicate on various levels: verbal, telephone and written, to include management reports, visitor, patient and employee levels, writing incident reports and monitor all areas of the hospital.
- Must have sufficient dexterity and mobility to handle equipment efficiently and safely.
- Must be mentally alert and able to exercise solid judgement and assertive in job duties.
- Responsible to encourage patients, visitors and guests to not smoke on hospital property and only in designated areas.

- Ability to perform various motor skills such as; walking for long periods of time, standing, lifting (up to 50 pounds)-using proper lifting techniques, sitting, stair climbing, reaching, bending, twisting, pushing, pulling, squatting, grasping and arm-hand coordination on a continuous basis.

Required education and experience
- High School Diploma or equivalent.
Preferred education and experience
- Preferably two (2) years of experience in security guard training or experience.
