Furman Counseling Center at Barnard College is responsible for the provision of counseling and psychological services in the Rosemary F. Furman Counseling Center (Furman), which provides confidential psychological counseling and care for Barnard College students. The Director of Counseling and Psychological Services reports to the AVP of Health & Wellness, who oversees all student-facing clinical operations in the Department of Health & Wellness. The Clinical Director of Counseling and Psychological Services will work cooperatively with Primary Care Health Services to ensure that student psychological services are accessible to referred students and to coordinate preventive programming at the LeFrak Center for Well-BCAeing. The Clinical Director of Counseling and Psychological Services must collaborate with the AVP of H&W to ensure the functioning of the overall operation of the Service. The Clinical Director of Counseling and Psychological Services (Clinical Director) provides consultation and supervision for counseling and psychological services, including direct clinical care and supervision to the clinicians in Furman.Job Description:Direct Client Care:Function as a clinician within the counseling services, including emergency consultations. Provide skilled, ethical, evidence-based, comprehensive psychological care to students, including treating patients directly, providing telehealth services, participating in a rotational on-call duty to assist students in crisis, following up on outside emergency care, communicating and collaborating with other offices at the college (Primary Care Health Services, LeFrak Center for Well-Being, CARDS (Center for Accessibility, Resources and Disability Services), Dean of Students Office, etc), and consulting with outside providers and specialists.Management and Oversight of Patient Care (Furman)Direct supervision of clinical staff, including psychotherapists, post-doctoral students, interns and liaisons.Work with the AVP of H&W to administer the mental health clinical services, including overseeing:

• the development and administration of policies and procedures by which the counseling service operates
• the scheduling of personnel and appointments
• the triage, intake process, case assignment, and case management
• treatment objectives and duration
• urgent/emergent evaluation
• referral procedures and hospitalization
• after-hours (24-hour) coverage and emergency procedures
• communication with after-hours phone triaging service

Work with the AVP of H&W and the training director to select and evaluate all counseling service therapists.Organize regular case conferences, and other indicated professional education within the counseling services.Schedule and oversee necessary professional development sessions to provide current clinical education to the Furman staff throughout the academic year. Manage all staff meetings and case discussions for Furman.In collaboration with the AVP for H&W, design, schedule, and implement the orientation process for new psychotherapists.Management and Oversight of Operations (Furman)Work with AVP and Director of Operations to coordinate staffing, budget preparation, allocation of resources, policy, and long-range planning for the Counseling Service and make recommendations to the H&W leadership.Assure the provision of quality care within the Service, including its documentation in charts and other records. Ensure the maintenance of documentation of Quality Assurance and Quality Improvement activities to enable the student health services to meet ambulatory facility accreditation standards. Collaborate with the AVP of H&W to develop the Quality Improvement (QI) program across departments-direct clinical care, behavioral care, and health promotion and educationadhering to the robust guidelines of the Accreditation Association for Ambulatory Health Care, inclusive of overseeing direct studies by providers, peer reviews, and benchmarking. Formulate, recommend, implement, evaluate, and regularly update policies in consultation with other appropriate campus partners.Regularly add and edit templates in the electronic medical record (EMR) to facilitate the clearest, most accurate, and most efficient documentation of patient visits. Ensure the training of Furman staff and providers on these template changes.College Collaboration (internal and external)In collaboration with H&W leadership, manage the intra-institutional interface between the Counseling service and all other segments of the College community. These include assuring mental health participation in the Dean's Evaluation Committee, collaboration with the leaves and returns committee by serving on the Leaves and Returns Working Group, and appropriate interaction and consultation with the General Counsel's Office, Dean of Studies office, residential life staff, faculty departments, and other appropriate offices/departments at Barnard.Assure the coordination of all psychiatric hospitalizations and outside referrals, including maintaining a network of referral sources for students requiring inpatient therapy or outpatient care beyond the scope of the counseling services. Monitor the quality of treatment between inpatient and outpatient facilities and coordinate communication (where indicated and appropriate) between health services, outside therapists (inpatient and outpatient), students, and parents.With the support of the AVP for H&W, establish connections with appropriate medical resources within the Columbia community and New York City in order to facilitate patient services for both routine and emergency care. This includes developing and maintaining a list of psychological and psychiatric referrals and consultants in the metropolitan area and reaching out to specific medical or psychiatric specialists when needed.With the direction and collaboration H&W leadership and the LeFrak Center for Well-Being, participate in outreach activities on campus and, as appropriate, elsewhere in the Columbia, Morningside, and outside communities.Ensure that Furman providers are active participants in the clinical Eating Disorder Multidisciplinary team.Facilitate the use of the Barnard Student Health Services as a site for appropriate clinical research. Although research responsibilities are not a specified part of the Counseling Director's duties, such clinical research may occur with the approval of the Chief Health Officer of the College, the Director of the Primary Care Health Service, and the Barnard Institutional Review Board.Serve as a member of the Health and Wellness Department, with duties as may be assigned by Departmental leadership.The position is approximately 60% clinical, 40% administrative. This job is student-facing and currently a hybrid position (currently one day per week remote) and may require a presence in the office up to five times a week, including for team and full staff meetings and other times as directed by the AVP.Skills, Qualifications & Requirements:QUALIFICATIONS:

• Earned doctorate in psychology or social work; eligibility to function as a therapist in New York State or a current valid license in NY State
• Minimum 5 years of supervisory and administrative experience in
• outpatient counseling and psychological care
• Fellowship training or clinical experience in short-term outpatient
• treatment of adolescents or young adults
• Strong diagnostic and treatment skills
• Expertise in behavioral health and evidence-based treatment modalities for mental health conditions, including but not limited to specialized care in eating disorders, trauma and trauma-informed care, biofeedback, DBT, and CBT
• Knowledge and experience in issues and concerns of undergraduate college students
• Highly effective interpersonal skills with the ability to work in a highly collaborative manner and strong problem-solving abilities.
• Strong ability and skills in leading and fostering the professional development of staff members
• Demonstrated interest in national involvement and leadership in student counseling and mental health
• Ability to interact effectively with stakeholders throughout the College and with a diverse student body and their families
• Demonstrated competence and interest in education and training activities, which include teaching skills and understanding of the process of behavioral change
• Strong oral and written communication skills
• Experience facilitating the hospitalization of clients
• Training/experience in crisis management and working with complex and severe mental health disorders
• Ability to work with and be sensitive to diverse populations; particular interest in and/or experience working with college-age students
