Physically able to perform manual tasks - walk, bend, push, pull, lift (moderate to heavy) for an extended period of time while completing assignments. Able to follow oral and written assignments and work on a team. Able to understand and carry out written and oral instructions. Ability to use tools with care and store properly. Ability to communicate and work cooperatively with team. Required License or Certification Position Overview Primary Purpose of Position General Utility Worker performs physical labor that includes grounds upkeep, moving and hauling and setting up for special events. Duties include grounds maintenance and upkeep (cutting grass, planting and pruning shrubs, weeding shrub beds, edging walks, sowing grass seed); policing grounds and trash collection and removal; moving and hauling of furniture, equipment and materials; setting up, break down and return of stages, props, chairs or other items required for special events; and snow and ice removal. Position is required to report for work during adverse weather (ice, snow and other emergencies) as well as perform other assigned duties. Primary Function of Organizational Unit The Grounds Department provides maintenance and upkeep for the University's 200 acre campus, 800 acre farm, and other off-campus properties, natural landscape features and the athletic complex. Other services include sanitation (trash collection and removal), grounds maintenance and upkeep, landscaping, moving/hauling, and setting up for special events. Work Hours 8 hrs M-F (between 6am-4pm); work overtime and alternate weekends (3 hrs on Saturday, 2 hrs on Sunday); REQUIRED to work during adverse weather (snow, ice, other emergencies) Is this position eligible for a remote or hybrid work arrangement, consistent with university and state policies. Key Responsibilities and Related Competencies Required Competency Knowledge - Technical Duties Work as a tradesman's helper, cleaning campus of debris, cleaning walks and curbs, cutting lawns, edging/trimming, pruning shrubs and trees, mulching, planting trees, shrubs, and flowers. Remove snow and ice (adverse weather clean-up). Move and haul furniture or other materials including chemicals and gases manually or otherwise. Set-up and break down for special events. Performs maintenance of grounds: seeds, fertilizes, installs fences and sign posts. Assists with safe application of herbicides, pesticides, and fertilizers. Operates riding mowers, farm tractors, and other grounds equipment/attachments, etc. safely. Trash/Recycling Collection: Drive pickup truck and utility vehicles to provide assistance with trash collection as needed. Collect recyclable waste from buildings. Inspect grounds and other exterior trash barrels for recyclables, sorting into specialized containers while avoiding contamination. Dispose of recyclables at established sites around Guilford County. Collect data (weight tickets, cost, etc.) and turns in to supervisor for reports. Assist with trash collection by walking and policing the campus to pick up debris. Comply with all policies and procedures regarding safety, security, emergencies and energy. Report to work on time and in complete uniform and safety gear. Required Competency Interpersonal Skills Duties Follow oral and written instructions and asks questions to complete tasks. Act as a lead worker for laborers in group to upkeep and grade grounds area, seed, dig holes and plant shrubs. Develop and maintain effective working relationships with others in order to encourage and support communication and teamwork. Required Competency Safety and Health Compliance Duties Practice safe operating procedures with equipment, around students and facilities. Attend safety meetings, wears personal protective clothing for the season. Completes assignments according to OSHA safety standards and practices safe use of chemicals and/or fertilizers in planting, as well as in the operation of tools, equipment or vehicles. Required Competency Customer Service/Communication Duties Communicate and work cooperatively with fellow workers, and others in an acceptable manner. Follow oral and written instructions and ask questions to complete tasks. Listen to co-workers' questions or self-identifies questions that need answering.
