Job Description

JOB SUMMARY:

The Degreed Lab Assistant performs a variety of technical and non-technical job functions related to patient specimens and testing.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS:

* Assesses all specimens for appropriate labeling, specimen type and shipping conditions.

* Performs laboratory testing, which may include high complexity testing, as assigned and according to established protocols.

* Calibrates and perform routine maintenance on laboratory equipment and instrumentation according to laboratory protocols.

* Maintains laboratory supply inventory.

* Performs Quality Control and Quality Assurance procedures.

* Successfully participates in all accreditation and other proficiency testing and annual performance competencies

* Communicates information with internal and external customers as appropriate in an accurate, timely, effective and professional manner.

* Able to work in a fast-paced, high volume environment.

* Performs testing in the Chemistry and Microbiology sections of the clinical laboratory. Manual and automated equipment will be used to perform analytical tests including but not limited to: general chemistry and immunology tests, Ionized Calcium, serum and urine Osmolality, specimen dilution and reanalysis, Strep group A, urine pregnancy testing, testing for flu, and respiratory pathogens on molecular platforms, and plating of Microbiology specimens.

* Receives and processes incoming lab specimens as appropriate. Specimen types include but are not limited to blood, urine, stool, and body fluids.

* Notifies appropriate staff members of any calibration or equipment failures which cannot be immediately resolved.

* Maintain laboratory supply inventory, notifying appropriate laboratory staff when supplies are below established par levels.

* Reports any values outside of acceptable ranges that cannot be resolved to the appropriate laboratory staff member.

* Recognizes test result or instrument function problems that require additional troubleshooting, performs troubleshooting or seeks additional assistance as appropriate.
