Job Description :
  • JOB SUMMARY
    • The Paramedic-ED carries out specific tasks, which are required for effective and efficient patient care delegated by a registered nurse or physician in an Emergency Department setting. Promote courteous and professional interactions with co-workers, patients, family members, and other professionals. Enhance the company's reputation, help promote a smooth working relationship between management and employees, and maintain company equipment. Paramedics may perform certain functions in the Emergency Department within their scope of practice and medical center policy. The RN directs and plans the care of the patients; therefore paramedic will communicate and review orders with the RN prior to administration.
  • DUTIES AND ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
    • Overall performance rating of below indicated essential job duties:
    • Provides patient care as directed by the RN or provider including, but not limited, such tasks as:
      • 12 lead/15 lead ECG's and cardiac monitoring
      • Peripheral IV insertion and performing blood draws for lab specimens. Initiate intraosseous and external jugular IV's and operating IV pumps
      • Splint application, wound cleansing and dressings, eye and ear irrigation, suture/staple removal, throat and nasopharyngeal cultures, visual acuity, insertion of nasogastric tubes and foley catheters
      • Assisting physician with pre and post procedures: lumbar puncture, suture/staple insertion, incision & drainage, pelvic exam as appropriate, central line insertion, chest tube insertion, peritoneal lavage, transvenous pacer, cricoidthyrotomy, art line insertion, pericardiocentesis, thoracentesis
      • Application of traction such as hare or sager traction; Immobilization of patient with LSB, CID, C-collar, and/or KED devices
      • Monitoring of patients: cardiac monitor, pulse oximetry, capnography, temperature, weight, height
      • Point of care testing: fingerstick glucose.
      • Assist with resuscitative procedures: intubation (under direct supervision of physician), performing CPR, defibrillation, cardioversion, cardiac pacing
      • Hazardous materials patient decontamination procedures
      • Assist with medical and violent restraints under direction of RN/physician. Monitors behavioral patients who require one on one monitoring
      • Assisting patient with activities of daily living, answering call lights and responding to requests appropriately
    • Documents care and treatment appropriately in the patient medical record.
    • Facilitates flow in the Emergency Department by stocking of supplies and cleaning of equipment throughout the department and transferring patient to other departments per wheelchair or stretcher
  • EDUCATION/LICENSE/CERTIFICATION/OTHER REQUIREMENTS
    • Minimum requirement:
      • Paramedic Certificate or Associate's Degree
      • Maintains active Paramedic License in the State of Kentucky
      • Achieves and maintains American Heart Association certifications:
        • Basic Life Support (BLS)
        • Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS)
        • Pediatric Advanced Life Support (PALS)
      • Completes Advanced Medical Life Support (AMLS) Certification within 1 year of start and maintains certification.
      • Completes Prehospital Trauma Life Support (PHTLS) course within 1 year of start.
      • Hazmat Operations Level education within 1 year of start.
      • Achieves and maintains Non-Violent Crisis Intervention (CPI) within 90 days of start.
    • Preferred qualifications:
      • Five years of experience as a Paramedic.
  • WORKING ENVIRONMENT
    • Constantly works near moving mechanical parts
    • Constantly exposed toblood and/or body fluids andinfection.
    • Occasionally exposed to toxic or caustic chemicals
    • Occasionally exposed to risk of radiation
    • The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
  • PHYSICAL DEMANDS
    • Occasionally required to maintain in a stationary position (standing or sitting).
    • Frequently required to walk and move about.
    • Frequently required to operate a computer and other equipment.
    • Frequently required to use fine motor skills to handle and operate instruments/devices.
    • Constantly required to lift and/or move items up to 10 pounds.
    • Frequently required to lift and/or move items up to 50 pounds.
    • Occasionally required to lift and/or move items up to 100 pounds.
    • Constantly required to communicate with patients and other care team requiring talking and hearing.
    • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, and depth perception.
    • Occasionally required to position self in order to meet patient needs.
