POSITION SUMMARY
+ The Health Information Management (HIM) & Coding Manager manages the daily operations of the HIM and coding department, ensuring that all medical records are accurately maintained and coded. This role involves supervising HIM and coding staff, ensuring compliance with healthcare laws (such as HIPAA), optimizing the flow of patient health information, and working with clinical and administrative teams to support the hospitals or clinics revenue cycle. ________________________________________
POSITION QUALIFICATIONS
+ Education and Experience:
+ + Bachelor's degree in Health Information Management, Healthcare Administration, or a related field. Masters degree preferred.
+ Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification required.
+ + Minimum of 3-5 years of experience in health information management, with at least 2 years in a supervisory or management role.
+ Extensive knowledge of ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS coding systems.
+ Knowledge of reimbursement methodologies required (i.e. DRGs, APCs, etc.)
+ Experience working with electronic health record systems (EHR), such as Epic or Cerner, is preferred.
+ License/Certificates:
+ + Registered Health Information Administrator (RHIA), or Registered Health Information Technician (RHIT) certification required
+ Special Skills and Aptitudes:
+ + Strong leadership and team management skills.
+ In-depth knowledge of healthcare laws, regulations, and standards (e.g., HIPAA, HITECH).
+ Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and organizational skills.
+ Ability to communicate complex information to both clinical and non-clinical staff.
+ Proficient with coding software and health information systems.
ESSENTIAL RESPONSIBILITIES
+ Management and Supervision:
+ Lead, train, and manage a team of health information professionals and medical coders.
+ Ensure that medical records are accurately maintained.
+ Ensure that medical records are coded following ICD-10, CPT, and HCPCS guidelines.
+ Monitor staff productivity and quality of medical records completion, maintenance and ensuring accurate and timely coding of all records.
+ Conduct regular performance reviews and staff development initiatives.
+ Assist the director in managing timecards an updating schedules
+ Assist the director with interviewing, selecting, hiring and orientation of new employees
Compliance and Accuracy:
+ Ensure compliance with federal, state, and local healthcare regulations such as HIPAA and correct coding guidelines.
+ Conduct regular audits to ensure accuracy in documentation and coding.
+ Stay current with healthcare and regulatory compliance ensuring that the department complies with updates in regulations, laws, and best practices.
+ Serve as the primary contact for external audits and ensure prompt responses to auditors.
Process Improvement:
+ Analyze and improve workflows within the HIM department to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
+ Implement changes to coding procedures to adapt to new healthcare technology or regulatory changes.
+ Utilize data analytics to drive improvements in documentation and coding accuracy.
Collaboration:
+ Work closely with clinical teams to ensure accurate documentation that supports coding and billing.
+ Collaborate with billing and finance departments to optimize the revenue cycle by ensuring accurate coding and documentation.
+ Communicate with IT staff to manage and update health information management systems (e.g., EHRs).
Education and Training:
+ Provide ongoing training to coding and clinical staff on documentation requirements and coding guidelines.
+ Develop educational materials and conduct workshops or seminars on HIM topics for both internal teams and external stakeholders.
Reporting and Data Management:
+ Prepare and deliver reports to senior management regarding coding productivity, compliance, and audit results.
+ Oversee the maintenance, security, and integrity of patient health records in electronic health record (EHR) systems.
+ Ensure that records are easily accessible while maintaining confidentiality and security.
