Our client, an early stage, rapidly growing, industry leader in legal technology that is revolutionizing the delivery of legal services, has exclusively retained Solutus Legal Search to assist the Company in its search for a Vice President, Legal & Compliance to lead the Company's legal function. Reporting to our client's Chief Financial Officer, you will lead our client's legal strategy across various complexities as the company scales. You will use your extensive legal background to partner closely with executive leadership and provide strategic and creative solutions to fuel our client's disruptive business. You will lead an international team of lawyers and legal professionals that tackles state and federal regulations, business development, IP, corporate matters, data privacy and security, compliance, litigation, and more. This hire will be expected to be in the office 2 to 3 days per week and as needed What You Will Do
- Lead legal and compliance
- Become a trusted advisor to the executive team; providing legal counsel, creative strategy, and candor to business decisions
- Partner with the heads of product, R&D, and marketing teams
- Guide the business on data privacy and regulatory compliance - particularly as the company enters new markets and develops business models
- Oversee the compliance rollouts for new business lines and expansions, based on advice provided by compliance attorneys and managers
- Establish and maintain relationships with industry experts and advisors
- Manage a global team of lawyers and specialists
- Take responsibility for and manage legal and compliance matters across all departments
Key Qualifications
- 10 to 15+ years of legal experience primarily advising high-growth technology companies operating within highly regulated spaces, either at a law firm or in-house, with 3+ years in a leadership-level legal role
- Significant breadth of knowledge in as many of the following areas as possible: consumer protection, AI/ML, advertising and marketing laws, financial services, data privacy and protection, e-commerce, and ABA regulations/ethics
- Skilled communicator and negotiator, with deep expertise in regulatory compliance, and demonstrated success in guiding an organization through complex regulatory landscapes
- Experience leading a legal team, and comfort managing international teammates
- Comfort and experience interacting with C-suites; understand the need for succinctness, candor, and precision
- An ability to clearly communicate the risks involved in business decisions and an ability to think-outside-the-box and navigate uncharted areas, while balancing risk and opportunity
- Partner with cross functional strategic teams in pioneering the growth and development of new business lines for the company
- Confidence, diplomacy, persuasion, and influence under pressure
- Analytical thinker with problem-solving skills, providing strategic and business-oriented solutions
- Strong experience advising on employment law matters, including employee relations, workplace policies, discrimination, harassment, wage and hour compliance, and employee benefits
- Excellent writing skills with adaptable content and tone (e.g., translating complex legal language to concise, digestible formats across functions)
- Occasional travel required
- JD from accredited US law school and admitted to practice law in New York (or eligible to practice law in New York)
Compensation for this position consists of an annual base salary range of $300,000 to $325,000, 20-30% bonus target, and an equity grant. The total compensation package will vary and depend on the candidate's level of seniority and number of years of directly relevant experience.
