Job: Dispatcher- On Call Job Summary: Under the direction of the Community Safety unit of CARES, support campus safety and security functions and assist with procedures designed to ensure the safety of the Barnard community. As a member of the Community Safety Office, the Dispatcher performs coordination and clerical duties of maintaining security and safety protection systems, campus information, telephones, security telephones and radio communications. Dispatchers also provide general administrative support to the department and general information to the college community and the public. Job Description:
  • Monitor all central station monitoring security and safety systems at the Community Safety Office including video surveillance, fire alarms, carbon monoxide detectors, and door access. Assist in the department's response to campus incidents by communicating central station monitoring information while maintaining open lines of communication between CARES department personnel and other campus stakeholders according to established procedures.
  • Coordinate all telephones and radio communications during respective shifts, document all emergency calls, notifications and information according to established procedures. Maintain detailed log information following Department protocol.
  • Assess incoming calls and in-person requests, in collaboration with the CARES non-emergency line call taker; dispatch and communicate with Community Safety personnel and Facilities staff, documenting actions according to established procedures. Coordinate with Response Team and facilities, including support for after-hours dispatch of emergency maintenance and custodial personnel .Maintain department equipment like radios, and conduct checks of central station systems like Lenel, Video monitors, and department phone lines to ensure they are functioning properly.
  • Assist with the disbursement of department equipment during the change of shift to Community Safety personnel for respective shifts.
  • Perform clerical duties that are essential to support the range of services provided by the CARES department to the faculty, staff, students, and visitors.
  • Provide general campus information to the public and College community, including, but not limited to directions, event information, and resource referrals to appropriate CARES staff or campus partners. Such information may be communicated in an accurate, professional, unbiased manner in person, by phone, or in writing.
  • Assist campus stakeholders with the process for obtaining new or replacement IDs through the direction to online forms supporting issuance of pertinent department forms, while ensuring properly documenting related actions.
  • Assist with CARES support of college-wide Lost and Found process by utilizing web-based technology, taking in information thoroughly, and following established department procedures.
  • Attend required College and CARES Department training sessions. Review department and college communication through email, logs and roll call messages each shift.
  • Assist Community Safety Supervisors in communication with CARES department and campus partner staff according to established procedures.
  • Perform related duties in support of department and College operations for security and emergency response, as assigned.
Skills, Qualifications & Requirements: Knowledge, Skills, Abilities:
  • Verbal communication skills, comfort with and understanding of interacting within a diverse community. Attention to proper handling of sensitive information.
  • Computer literacy, such as the use of Microsoft office, google platform computer tools. Comfort navigating technology such as documentation, video, or other information tracking tools.
  • Ability to communicate with a calm demeanor and clear instruction under pressure or in crisis situations.
  • Ability to prioritize multiple requests, working independently and as part of a team, and in collaboration with campus partners.
Qualifications:
  • High School diploma plus 2 to 3 years' related experience
  • Ability to comprehend, write, and speak English fluently
  • Ability to maintain composure in an emergency situation
  • Ability to maintain professional and technical competency
Preferred Qualifications:
  • 1 year of previous experience as a central station monitor or a first responder
  • Experience with monitoring video surveillance technology, such as Lenel systems
This is a 2110 grade VII Pay Rate: $32.11/hour The salary of the finalist selected for this role will be set based on a variety of factors, including but not limited to departmental budgets, qualifications, experience, education, licenses, specialty, and training.
