NOTTOWAY SHERIFF'S OFFICE is now accepting applications for the position of 911 COMMUNICATIONS DISPATCHER. Position requires dispatching fire, rescue, law enforcement personnel, general office filing, good computer skills, ability to speak distinctly and communicate orally under stressful conditions. Applicant must be at least (18) years old, high school graduate or equivalent, and a US citizen. Prior emergency medical dispatch or medical knowledge preferred but not required for the full-time position.

Must be willing to work SHIFT WORK, HOLIDAYS and WEEKENDS and satisfactorily complete man-dated training for this position.

Pay commensurate with experience.

A Communications Officer (CO) is responsible for answering all emergency and non-emergency calls for service and dispatching appropriate personnel. Duties shall consist of, but are not limited to:

  • Utilize a computer-aided dispatch (CAD) system to enter, prioritize, and track calls for service. o Maintain records retained in the CAD System such as: Name files, vehicle files, call history, etc.
  • Answer emergency calls from the public requesting police, fire, medical, or other emergency services o Determine the nature and location of the emergencies and dispatch police, fire, ambulance or other emergency units as necessary and in accordance with established procedures. o Maintain contact with all units on assignment and maintain the status and location of all on-duty police units.
  • Enter, update and retrieve information from a variety of computer systems, including the

Virginia Criminal Information Network (VCIN) and the National Crime Information Center(NCIC). o Disseminate information regarding vehicle registration, driving records, warrants, and protection orders. Operate and monitor a variety of communications equipment, including eight (8) radio channels, six (6) administrative phone lines, eight (8) 911 phone lines, and a computerized mapping system.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities:

Demonstrate the ability to: * Speak distinctly and communicate orally under stressful conditions.

  • Work efficiently in a high-stress environment.
  • Operate a computer.
  • Type at least 25 words per minute.

Education and Experience:

  • Graduation from high school or equivalent. Responsible work experience. Completion/ability to complete appropriate training, to include but not limited to:
  • DCJS Basic Dispatch
  • VCIN Operator Certification
  • APCO EMD Certification
