Job Description :
The American Lung Association has an excellent opportunity for an Intern, Health PromotionsinPalm Desert, California.Alongside members of the Health Promotions team, you will join an outstanding group of professionals dedicated to our mission: to save lives by improving lung health and preventing lung disease through research, education, and advocacy. In this role, the intern will support the Inland Empire staff in executing health promotion activities, with a particular focus on tobacco prevention. Responsibilities will include assisting in initiatives aimed at creating smokefree outdoor public spaces and smokefree multi-unit housing, as well as engaging with the tobacco retail environment to promote healthier community standards. The intern will attend community events and support activities such as tabling, health education presentations, and participation in community workgroup meetings.This is a paid internship position requiring a minimum time commitment of 10 hours per week (flexible schedule) and must be eligible for course credit or fulfill an internship graduation requirement. This position is for Fall 2024 and must be completed by 12/16/2024. PROJECTS This is a great opportunity for the intern to enhance their skills in organization, multi-tasking and communications. The intern can expect to develop confidence and marketable skills by engaging in or assisting with many of the following activities:
  • Gain a basic understanding of the American Lung Association
  • Become knowledgeable of mission, development, and communications efforts.
  • Gain technical training by utilizing Microsoft Office Suite applications, including Microsoft Teams.
  • Participate in staff meetings and learning opportunities.
  • Advocacy & Health Promotion
  • Research and summarize public health facts and figures.
  • Identify, schedule and conduct outreach events and tabling opportunities.
  • Help assemble health education materials for tabling events.
  • Identify and recruit community members to participate in project activities.
  • Participate in revision of presentations on smoke-free initiatives and other tobacco-related topics, supporting the staff in facilitating these discussions rather than presenting independently. Intern role will focus on assisting the team and engaging with attendees to promote awareness and understanding of these important issues.
  • Tabling at resource fair and community events
  • Assist with development of smokefree activities and educational events.
LEARNING OUTCOMES:
  • Learn more about Non-Profit structure, including mission, development, and communications efforts.
  • Gain technical training by utilizing Microsoft Office Suite applications, including Microsoft Teams.
  • Learn about team building and collaborating with staff.
  • Learn how to develop communications for health education, outreach, and policy platforms.
  • Learn how to recruit, mobilize, and engage communities in health advocacy.
  • Gain experience in health education outreach.
  • Learn to cultivate relationships.
  • Learn how to communicate in a professional office setting.
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Must be working towards a degree in Health Sciences, Non-Profit Management, or a related field.
  • Must be currently enrolled at UC Riverside: Palm Desert, CSU San Bernardino: Palm Desert, College of the Desert, California Indian Nations College, or Mayfield College.
  • Qualified candidates must be enthusiastic, reliable, and interested in developing a career in health sciences, advocacy, or non-profit management.
  • Qualified candidates should possess strong writing skills, attention to detail, and have a keen interest in the mission of the American Lung Association.
  • Ability to multitask, perform in a team environment, and a demonstrated willingness to learn.
  • Ability to work independently.
  • Reliable transportation.
  • Computer Proficiency - Microsoft Word, Excel, PowerPoint, and Publisher.
  • Ability to lift and carry 25 lbs. (supplies).
