Job Duties and Responsibilities
- Schedule repairs and services in house or off site. Advise operators when equipment will not be available and assign appropriate replacement units to complete all the routes.
- Establish and maintain vehicle records on various electronic platforms as well as hard cos to establish a pattern of redundancy for state, federal, city, and department record keeping. Keep track of daily and annual DOT documents so they can be readily available for audit.
- Monitor and interpret trouble codes generated by vehicles working on routes or off-site.
- Establish and maintain vehicle assignment, technical specifications, maintenance and cost history on M-5, Verizon Connect Networkfleet, as well as hard copy.
- Monitor the success of repair efforts especially when dealing with non-typical fault scenarios or AVL monitoring.
- Enter and approve payroll for all shop personnel through the city COMET HR system.
- Conduct weekly shop safety or toolbox meetings as required.
- Dispatch outside mechanic to field breakdowns and provide a map of location if required.
- Assist in obtaining and distributing licenses and overweight documents for the fleet.
- Meet with vendors and up fitters to verify build specifications are met during and after the equipment manufacturing process.
- Provide lead work over employees and coordination of all shop activities whenever the Shop Supervisor is out of the office for anything from hourly meetings to extended vacations.
- Advise and educate employees on state, federal, city, department, and division policies and procedures. Answer equipment questions from operators and field Forman.
- Monitor compliance of operators and drivers adhering to written policies.
- Inspect and document accident damage to units and determine cause. Start the accident review process if there are no SME's available.
- Determine if crews are making efficient use of time, direction of travel, if reverse gear is selected, PTO status, and the number of tips per day as required for field foreman.
- Present training seminars to a group setting related to equipment usage, new procedures, and safety information.
- Comply with internal or external requests to pinpoint vehicle locations in real time or historically.
- Assist in procuring and disposing of fleet vehicles.
- Ensure adequate notification to interested parties before fleet sales. Relinquish city control of vehicles only after verifying payment has been secured.
- Approve invoices for payment in the EDMS basket system and verify and approve requisitions..
- Compile data and generate reports on fleet utilization.
Required QualificationsMinimum Education: Associate's level in auto body, mechanical repair or related fieldMinimum Experience: Three years of related experience. Experience should include auto body or mechanical work with a large equipment focus and working with scheduling and record-keeping software.EquivalencyAn equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered.Licenses/Certifications: Valid Class B Commercial Driver's LicenseDesired: DOT inspector certificate, ASE certifications, Certified Automotive Fleet Manager, or Certified Automotive Fleet Specialist.A resume is required. - Good knowledge of equipment repair, operation drivers/users, and mechanics.
- Thorough knowledge of all mechanical systems on a specialized fleet such as packers, snowplows, fire trucks, street sweepers, cranes, and heavy equipment would be desirable.
- Analytical skills and the ability to hen research information needed in a day to day business cycle is required for this position in Solid Waste and Recycling.
- Ability utilize modern database software or compile reports, target specific information, or furnish rebuild and repair data to potential bidders of our equipment for sale.
- Verbal and written communications skills and ability to deal with other city staff as well as manufactures reps, vendors, and service departments outside of the City.
