Work may be assigned at any La Crosse County owned building or property. The current opportunity is to work primarily on our downtown La Crosse campus. Maintains and repairs all types of building equipment and furnishings.Performs minor plumbing repairs including touchless faucets and toilets.Performs installation, maintenance, and repair of equipment for which skills in electricity, carpentry, plumbing, painting or other skilled trades are necessary. Replaces electrical breakers, switches, ballasts, and fixtures, window glass and screens.Constructs, paints and repairs picnic tables, benches, fences and signs.Plows, salts and removes snow from roads, sidewalks and parking areas using skid steers, plow trucks, snow blowers, brushes, and shovels.Mows grass, rakes lawns, prunes shrubs, prunes and cuts down trees, cuts weeds and brush using hand tools and chainsaws. Hauls garbage and debris.Cleans, sanitizes and maintains restrooms, toilets, buildings and grounds and other assigned areas. Unplugs toilets and other pipes as necessary.Assists in moving equipment as necessary.Keeps maintenance records and makes reports by hand and using a computer.Operates and/or assists in operating a variety of machines, tools and equipment to include welding equipment, electrical meters to troubleshoot equipment, end loaders, mowers, trucks, and other road and grounds maintenance equipment.Maintains and performs routine maintenance on County vehicles and lawn/snow equipment.Maintains in good repair all tools and equipment used in work, to include refueling.Performs preventative maintenance work per schedule.Attend mandatory in-services.Protects County property from abuse such as vandalism and reports such to proper authority.Works safely and follows safety practices and standards of the Facilities department; responsible for reporting or correcting any existing or potential safety or accident hazard.In this public service position, employee is required to be courteous, cooperative and respectful at all times, with the public and clients. Also establishes and maintains a courteous, cooperative and respectful working relationship with other employees, supervisors, visitors, and public officials.Physical demands: Frequently lifts and dumps barrels of garbage weighing approx. 60 lbs. Frequently lifts and carries (up to 80 lbs.); occasionally lifts up to 100 lbs. Rides and operates lawn mowers and other power equipment. Wears safety equipment such as goggles, gloves and ear protection. Occasionally carries and uses line trimmer weighing approx. 20 lbs. Handles, carries and operates various machinery and equipment such as hand and power tools, chainsaws, shovels, pick, hammer and brooms. Reaches and uses arms and hands for carrying equipment, painting and other maintenance work. Climbs ladders and uses step stools. Works at heights to paint, repair roofs or other functions. Drives truck. Walks, pushes, pulls, bends, twists, reaches, crouches, kneels and climbs while performing duties. Sweeps, mops and carries buckets of water. Frequently stands and walks; occasionally climbs hills and walks uneven terrain. Uses near and far vision, reads, writes and uses independent judgment. Comprehends and carries out oral and written instructions. Works indoors and outdoors in all types of weather, including rain, snow and extreme cold and heat. Dramatic shifts in temperature, dust, noise, vibrations and mechanical hazards are factors. Hazards exist in operating mechanical equipment listed above and fire hazards when filling gas tanks on equipment. Tasks may involve exposure to blood/body fluids. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities Considerable knowledge of and ability to safely use, various construction and maintenance equipment.Working knowledge of building, grounds, maintenance and construction work.Knowledge of and ability to perform extensive wall repair and surfacing techniques, good carpentry skills, mechanics and general aptitude for repair of equipment.Ability to troubleshoot and make repairs/adjustments on machinery and equipment.Knowledge of, with ability to operate, various types of maintenance equipment including hand and power tools, chainsaws, various types of trucks, tractors, mowers and end loaders.Skill in electricity, carpentry, plumbing or other trade.Ability to perform minor repairs to small motors, plumbing, lighting fixtures, and other related tasks.Physical condition and agility to perform essential job functions, including lifting, pulling, bending, climbing and ability to work at heights.Working knowledge of occupational hazards, safety precautions, and safety codes.Ability to understand and carry out oral and written instructions, with strong attention to detail.Ability to work under varying climatic conditions.Ability to work cooperatively and harmoniously with others. Training, Experience and Other Requirements Graduation from an accredited high school, with training in industrial arts courses. Preference for individuals with advanced training at a technical school in a skilled trade such as, electricity, carpentry, plumbing or related.Three years previous work experience performing maintenance and grounds keeping duties.Must have a good work record and possess traits of honesty, trustworthiness, reliability, and dependability and teamwork.Must have reasonable availability for response to after-hours emergency situations and be available for a rotating on call schedule.Valid Wisconsin driver's license to operate County vehicles as necessary for obtaining supplies, etc.May consider other relevant combination of training and experience.Benefits for this position depend on the number of hours worked. If the position is full-time, then benefits would be available. If the position is part-time, then limited benefits would be available (this would not include insurances unless 30 hours per week or more).
