Laboratory Animal Medicine Services (LAMS) Laboratory Animal Medicine Services (LAMS) is responsible for the da husbandry and veterinary care of vertebrate animals housed or held by the University of Cincinnati. LAMS also provides training and support to faculty and staff that utilize animals. Job Overview The Office of Research LAMS department is hiring a Clinical Veterinarian or a Sr. Clinical Veterinarian to join the growing team of animal care and use professionals. The successful candidate may be appointed to a Clinical Veterinarian or Sr. Clinical Veterinarian based on qualifications, experience, and skills. This position will be responsible for the veterinary care of USDA covered species and rodents, assisting veterinary technical staff with care of medical cases and oversight of surgical prores, especia with USDA covered species, and assist with training, provide investigator support and guidance, and interact with the Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC). Provide regulatory guidance and oversight, helping to maintain university regulatorypliance and AAALAC International accreditation. The Sr Clinical Veterinarian will also oversee rodent biosecurity and provide investigator support, training, and guidance. They will be part of protocol review and other IACUC duties such as semi-annual inspections. Essential Functions Clinical Veterinarian Provide medical guidance to veterinary technical staff for rodent health cases and for care of USDA covered species. With the support of the Veterinary Technical team, responsible for pre-anesthesia, anesthesia, and anesthetic selection and maintenance of large and small animal species. Assist research staff in providing the most up to date and effective species-specific anesthesia and analgesia. Support the Director by providing didactic and hands-on training for LAMS technical staff, veterinary technicians, and research staff members. Guide the LAMS training staff to advance training programs, including orientation for new faculty. Provide support for regulatorypliance and Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC) activities. Provide investigator support (i.e., training, model development, new study designs). Assist with IACUC duties, performing veterinary pre-review of protocol amendments and veterinary verification and consultation (VVC). Assist with review of SOPs, Guidelines, and Quality Assurance Standards. Assist with strategic planning initiatives. animal, facility and personnel issues and concerns to the appropriate level. Participate in the veterinary on-call rotation. Perform related duties based on departmental need. This job description can be changed at any time. Additional Essential Functions In addition to the Essential Functions for the Clinical Veterinarian, the Sr. Clinical Veterinarian Essential Functions will include: Provide oversight of the Quality Assurance program and staff. Evaluate the biosecurity program for rodents, including import, export, and colony health monitoring. Perform periodic evaluation, and update, to ensure the program stays current with ever-changing accepted practice. Review, update, and modernize the training program. Perform on-site training for technicians to advance certification levels. Assist with personnel training and with coordination of meetings and continuingcation opportunities for staff. Perform IACUC protocol management, including review of new protocols, amendments, and veterinary verification and consultation (VVC). Assist with post-approval monitoring and regulatory and accreditation oversight; review the program description and policies & prores to meet and exceed the current regulatory standards. Assist with strategic planning initiatives, including budget reports. May provide direct and/or indirect supervision to exempt and non-exempt staff (i.e., hiring/firing, performance evaluations, disciplinary action, approve time off, etc.). Required Education Doctoral Degree in Veterinary Medicine (graduated from an AVMA Council on Education (COE)-accredited school or successfupleted ancational equivalency certification program such as that administered by the AVMA's Educational Commission for Foreign Veterinary Graduates (ECFVG). Required Trainings/Certifications Clinical Veterinarian Current license to practice veterinary medicine in at least one state is required with the requirement to obtain an Ohio license within one (1) year. Ability to obtain DEA license within one (1) year. Board eligibility by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) within three (3) years. Sr. Clinical Veterinarian In addition to the Required Trainings/Certifications for the Clinical Veterinarian, the Sr. Clinical Veterinarian Required Trainings/Certifications will include: Ability to obtain Board certification in laboratory animal medicine by the American College of Laboratory Animal Medicine (ACLAM) within one (1) year. Required Experience Clinical Veterinarian Two (2) years of experience in Laboratory Animal Medicine. Knowledge of pertinent laws, regulations, and policies that govern the use of animals in research. Ability to enter animal vivarium, including animal biosafety level two, rodent barrier housing, and chemical housing areas. Sr. Clinical Veterinarian In addition to the Required Experience for the Clinical Veterinarian, the Sr. Clinical Veterinarian Required Experience will include: Three (3) years of experience in Laboratory Animal Medicine. Additional Qualifications Considered Clinical Veterinarian ACLAM Diplomate. USDA Accredited. Experience working in an academic research environment. Experience managing genetica engineered mouse models. Experience working with rabs and swine.
