Job Title: Shipping Supervisor Company: Western Container Corporation Reports To: Assistant Plant Manager - Finance FLSA Status: Non-Exempt GENERAL PURPOSE OF JOB The Shipping Supervisor is responsible for creating a safe and organized work environment that allows for the efficient flow of materials and products into and out of the organization. Supervises shipping staff to receive, store and issue materials as needed for efficient product production. Coordinate shipping processes including appropriate paperwork, scheduling trucks and staging information as needed. Individual in this role is detail oriented in ensuring products are shipped and received according to bill of lading and packing slips. This position collaborates with management and manufacturing personnel ensuring an excellent product to the customer. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The following statements reflect the general details necessary to describe the major functions of this position and are not intended to be a detailed description of all the work/functions that may be required. Other duties may be assigned.
  • Examine shipment contents within 24 hours of receipt and compare with records, such as manifests, invoices, or orders, to verify accuracy.
  • Record shipment data with 98% accuracy (such as weight, charges, space availability, damages, or discrepancies) for reporting, accounting, and recordkeeping purposes.
  • Daily prepare documents (such as work orders, bills of lading, or shipping orders) to route materials.
  • Confer or correspond with establishment representatives within 24 hours to rectify problems, such as damages, shortages, or nonconformance to specifications to determine corrective actions that will best serve the mission of the organization.
  • Pack, seal, label, or affix postage to prepare materials for shipping, using hand tools, power tools, or postage meter. Ensure 98% accuracy.
  • Contact carrier representatives to make arrangements or to issue instructions for shipping and delivery of materials.
  • Deliver or route materials to departments using hand truck, forklift or sorting bins while ensuring all safety standards are met 100%.
  • Requisition and store shipping materials and supplies to maintain weekly inventory of stock.
  • Determine shipping methods, routes, or rates for materials to be shipped. Research and compare the most cost-efficient methods and routes while still ensuring the integrity of the organization and the least environmental impact.
  • Coordinate truck scheduling with Plant Manager and Office Manager or their designee.
  • Compute amounts (such as space available, shipping, storage, or demurrage charges) using computer or price list. Ensure 98% accuracy.
  • Supervise staff to ensure standards are being met and resolve personnel problems.
  • Responsible for staff development.
  • Verify inventory computations by comparing them to physical counts of stock weekly and investigate discrepancies or adjust errors. Determine a plan of action to prevent discrepancies and determine necessary training to prevent future errors.
  • Keep record of and dispose of damaged or defective items or return them to vendors within 48 hours.
  • Daily clean and maintain supplies, tools, equipment, and storage areas to ensure compliance with safety regulations. Immediately report any safety concerns.
  • Daily prepare and maintain records and reports of inventories, price lists, shortages, shipments, expenditures, and goods used or issued.
  • Conduct daily forklift and hand tool maintenance checks. Request maintenance and retraining as needed to ensure equipment is running properly, safe, and is being used in a safe manner.
  • Safely and efficiently create a work environment that enables an efficient flow of materials and products into and out of the facility. Responsible for performing all work tasks in a safe manner and in accordance with organizational safety policies and requesting maintenance as needed.
  • Required to be a team player and collaborate with various departments to meet customer satisfaction.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
  • Responsible for supervising shipping staff.

  • High school diploma or general education degree (GED) required.
  • One to Three months experience and/or training or equivalent combination of education and experience.
  • Knowledge of ERP system, preferred.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Office (word, outlook and excel), preferred.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
  • Driver's License, preferred.
  • Forklift certification -required.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
  • Ability to read and comprehend simple instructions, short correspondence, and memos.
  • Ability to write simple correspondence.
  • Ability to effectively present information in one-on-one and small group situations to customers, clients, and other employees of the organization.
MATHEMATICAL SKILLS
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply, and divide in all units of measure, using whole numbers, common fractions, and decimals.
  • Ability to compute rate, ratio, and percent and to draw and interpret bar graphs.
REASONING ABILITY
  • Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out detailed but uninvolved written or oral instructions.
  • Ability to deal with problems involving a few concrete variables in standardized situations.

  • The normal work environment is a manufacturing facility.
  • Noise in the manufacturing environment is moderately loud with machinery and forklift traffic.
