SALARY: Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8a, in accordance with Mineral County Salary Scale, Pay Grades A, B, C, D, or F, commensurate with experience and education level. EVALUATION: Performance in this position will be evaluated by the building principal/immediate supervisor and in accordance with WV State Code §18A-2-12, WV State Board Policy 5314 and Mineral County Board of Education Evaluation Policy. JOB SUMMARY: The aide/paraprofessional assists the teacher(s) in a variety of ways to implement the instructional program including working directly with children in small groups or on a one-to-one basis; to establish effective rapport with students assigned to the classroom; to motivate students to develop attitudes and knowledge needed to provide a good educational foundation, in accordance with each pupil's ability. The aide/paraprofessional assigned to a school bus assists with the supervision of student passengers on the bus, including securing student passengers in various types of restraint. PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Assists teacher as needed with planning, preparation, and distribution of classroom materials;
  • Conducts learning games with students according to established procedures;
  • Maintains regular attendance and complies with State Law and County policies and regulations;
  • Maintains an environment that is safe for students and conducive to learning;
  • Anticipates and effectively addresses unforeseen crises associated with working with large groups of children;
  • Assists with supervision and instruction of children; copying, cutting, coloring, etc., to construct materials and bulletin boards.
  • Provides individualized and small-group instruction to reinforce skills that have been taught by the teacher;
  • Assists in implementing lessons based on district and school objectives and needs and abilities of students;
  • Assists with supervision of student passengers on buses and maintains a safe traveling environment, if assigned to transportation duties;
  • Attends in-services and workshops as directed;
  • Maintains confidentiality, unquestionable integrity;
  • Assists the teacher in supervision of children in the classroom and to various locations in the school including, but not limited to, instructional areas, the cafeteria, and the bus;
  • Participates in bus duty, hall monitoring, lunchroom duty, playground duty;
  • Maintains positive work habits;
  • Performs duties efficiently and productively;
  • Maintains and/or upgrades skills;
  • Promotes and maintains positive pupil-staff-community relations;
  • Adheres to Employee Code of Conduct as outlined in Mineral County School's Policy 4210; and
  • Performs duties as assigned by the immediate supervisor(s).
QUALIFICATIONS:
  • High School diploma or equivalent, pursuant to WV Code §18A-2-5;
  • Meet the definition of Qualifications in WV Code §18A-4-8b; demonstrated competency, pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8e (state-approved competency test), as required; and
  • Criminal background check conducted pursuant to WV Code §18-5-15c and/or §18A-3-10, as appropriate;

Aide I means a person selected and trained for a teacher-aide classification such as monitor aide, clerical aide, classroom aide or general aide (Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8); Aide II means a service person referred in the Aide I classification who has completed a training program approved by the State Board, or who holds a high school diploma or has received a General Educational Development certificate. Only a person classified in an Aide II class title may be employed as an aide in any special education program (Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8); Aide III means a service person referred to in the Aide I classification who holds a high school diploma or a General Educational Development certificate; and (a) has completed six semester hours of college credit at an institution of high education; or (b) is employed as an aide in a special education program and has one year's experience as an aide in special education (Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8); Aide IV means a service person referred to in the Aide I classification who holds a high school diploma or a General Educational Development certificate; and (a) has completed eighteen hours of State Board-approved college credit at a regionally accredited institution of higher education, or (b) has completed fifteen hours of State Board-approved college credit at a regionally accredited institution of higher education; and has successfully completed an in-service training program determined by the State Board to be the equivalent of three hours of college credit (Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8); Paraprofessional means a person certified pursuant to section two-a [§18A-3-2a], article three of this chapter to perform duties in a support capacity including, but not limited to, facilitating in the instruction and direct and indirect supervision of students under the direction of a principal, a teacher or another designated professional educator (Pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8), and thirty-six semester hours of post-secondary education or its equivalent in subjects directly related to performance of the paraprofessional job and as approved by the West Virginia State Board of Education in Policy 5202.
  • Successfully complete the current state competency exam for the aide classification pursuant to WV Code §18A-4-8e and WV State Board Policy 5202;
  • Ability to facilitate instruction and provide direct and indirect supervision of students under the direction of a professional educator;
  • Ability to effectively present information and respond to questions from administrators, students, staff and the general public consistent with the duties of this position;
  • Ability to add, subtract, multiply and divide in all units of measure consistent with the duties of this position;
  • Ability to apply concepts such as fractions, percentages, ratios, and proportions to practical situations consistent with the duties of this position;
  • Ability to interface effectively with other school personnel, parents and business contacts outside of Mineral County Schools;
  • Ability to work with children and ability to work with adults;
  • Ability to work with individuals and groups of students to support academics and behavior management; and

  • Have serious behavior problems;
  • Have uneven patterns of intellectual functioning;
  • May have difficulty in understanding and expressing emotions;
  • Have disturbance in the capacity to relate appropriately to people, events and objects, communication, and social behavior;
  • Have no real fear of danger to self or others;
  • Have difficulty generalizing, following directions, sequencing, and staying on task outside their area of interest;
  • Resist change in routines;
  • Be nonverbal or delayed in language, speech, or meaningful communication;
  • Require assistance with the daily living needs of these children include toileting, special skills for feeding with extended time, assistance in mobility, placing student in a prone stander, frequent position changes throughout the day;

  • Need academic assistance in specific educational programs
The position also may require:
  • Administrating medication to special education and regular education students in accordance with West Virginia Code §18-5-22;
  • Lifting a minimum of 100 lbs. vertically;
  • Working with adaptive equipment, prosthetic devices, and augmentative communication devices;
  • Participating in and implementation of specialized training, including CPR, First Aid, CPI, Passive Restraint, Behavior Management, etc.;
  • Working with developmentally disabled students, medically fragile and/or orthopedically impaired students;
  • Implementing health care and behavior plans;
  • Working in a team teaching setting under the supervision of certified professionals;
  • Implementation of intervention techniques, positioning, lifting and handling techniques designed by teacher and related services providers;
  • Utilizing physical intervention and support techniques; and
  • Performing job coach responsibilities with appropriate training, as needed
