Description
The office of Program and Counsel provides central staff support to the Assembly Majority Democratic Conference and reports to the Speaker of the Assembly. This position is an opportunity to participate in state government and the legislative process. Staff works in a fast-paced, collaborative team environment to provide policy analysis & advice on the legal and constitutional aspects of legislation within assigned subject matter areas. Additionally, staff represents the Assembly Majority Democratic Conference in negotiations with the Senate and the Executive on the annual state budget. Other duties include research and development of policy initiatives;, drafting proposed legislation ; preparation of analytical Memoranda relating to bills; coordination of public hearings; briefing Assembly Majority Conference Members on budget and legislative negotiations; monitoring judicial, regulatory, and public policy developments; collaborating with members of the Assembly, Senate, Executive branch, lobbyists, state agencies, and advocacy groups to advance Conference priorities; assisting Assembly majority conference members with floor debates, public hearings, roundtable discussions, and other high-profile public events.

Hiring Criteria
Candidates must be admitted to the New York State bar as an attorney to practice law in New York State and must have a flexible schedule. Associate Counsel's work product should be objective, analytical, accurate, and thorough. Must have strong written and verbal communication skills and the ability to multi-task and analyze voluminous material in a fast-paced, production-oriented environment.

Compensation Details
Annual salary commensurate with experience and includes the New York State public employee benefit package of paid time off, Medical, Dental and life insurance, state pension, and eligibility for the federal Public Service Student Loan Forgiveness program.
Salary starting at $80,000
