Department University Police Job Purpose
This position requires the candidate to take and process all calls for emergency services through the University emergency telephone system. The duties include interacting with the general public, providing general information, dispatching emergency calls to University Police, monitoring local emergency response providers such as police, fire, and emergency medical services, monitoring all fire and intrusion alarms and monitoring the video surveillance system.
Essential Duties
* Must be able to communicate effectively in writing on dispatch logs, police reports and other telecommunication/computer control devices
* Think and speak fluently, clearly and distinctly even while under stress
* Rapidly organize information into a concise and accurate message
* Possess a level of manual dexterity to rapidly and accurately operate switches, alarms, monitors or other telecommunication/computer devices
* Must be able to analyze a situation accurately then make or suggest an appropriate course of action during an emergency situation
* Hear and distinguish noises and accurately understand spoken language even when other noises are present
* Remain patient and calm when dealing with callers who are highly agitated, angry, intoxicated, emotionally upset or unable to effectively communicate the situation or needs
Additional Skills Required
* Successfully complete the 40 hour APCO Basic Telecommunicator Course and other training as necessary
* Pass any/all background investigations and medical screenings
* Learn and maintain a working knowledge of University policies and procedures as they pertain to the University and law enforcement
* Excellent written and verbal communication skills
* Must be computer literate
* Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills
* Must be able to support the University's commitment to fostering a diverse, equitable, and inclusive culture
* Must be able to respect, support and contribute to the University's Catholic and Jesuit mission
Minimum Education Requirements
High School diploma or equivalent is required

Prior emergency communications or security experience preferred
