The Endoscopy Clinical Lead collaborates with Nursing, Administrative and Provider leadership in planning, organizing, implementing, and evaluating patient care and developing programs to support clinical care consistent with the mission, goals and professional practice model of Brigham & Womens Faulkner Hospital as well as the requirements of applicable federal, state and local regulatory and/or accrediting agencies.
With skills spanning all areas of endoscopy practice the Clinical Leader will drive development and use of evidence-based practice, information system structures and processes to support the highest quality, most efficient patient care. Responsibilities include participation in oversight and operation of the patient care area and ensuring quality care for patients across the lifespan.
Central goals of this role are to enhance the productive, meaningful use of information systems, new technology, and practice standards to benefit staff, patients, families and the organization; strengthen collaboration between all Endoscopy areas, the Brigham Health Endoscopy group and other hospital units to support optimized patient flow and excellent patient experience.
Assists Nursing, Administrative and Provider leadership in translating the philosophy, objectives, policies and procedures of the hospital and nursing service into effective action and assures the practice of the Patient and Family Centered Care Model in an environment that exemplifies evidence-based best practice.
1. LEADERSHIP

2. PATIENT CARE
- Clinical Practice:
- Demonstrates clinical expertise, integrating nursing theory and practice.
- Collaborates with nursing and interdisciplinary team members to ensure safest, most efficient patient flow through all clinical areas.
- Employs evidence-based practice in decision-making and patient care. Coordinates and directs patient care to ensure patients needs are met and hospital policy is followed.
- Utilizes the nursing process for the delivery and management of patients care across the continuum of care appropriate to the developmental age of the patient population.
- Collaborates with nurses and other members of the health care team to optimize plan of care.
- Develops and monitors systems that promote and support top of license, professional nursing practice.
- Interacts with staff nurses to assess the care provided and the nurses capabilities to provide care in changing circumstances.
- Provides consultation to patients, family members and nursing staff as issues arise regarding the patients hospitalization or care experience.
- Acts as a clinical resource to staff by: A. Evaluating patient care outcomes based on age-specific needs. B. Recommending changes in practice based on current research data. C. Developing and promoting patient care standards.
- Assists staff to problem solve and respond to psychosocial needs of patients and families and takes appropriate action.
- Maintains open communication with managers/directors and clinical leads whose departments provide support services to the clinical area to ensure the appropriate level of service at all times.
- Demonstrates the ability to be flexible, organized and function well under stressful situations.
- Information Systems:
- Leads development, standardization, coordination, and maintenance of clinical areas electronic structures, data sources and processes.
- Assesses opportunities for improvement in use of electronic health record, data sources and other electronic tools to enhance safety, quality, patient and staff experience.
- Leads development of data infrastructure to guide quality improvement.
- Supports change management around adoption of new tools, processes, and workflows.
- Works collaboratively with leaders to develop Departmental reference website for staff use.
- Works collaboratively with leaders to support adoption of new technologies.
- Quality Improvement:
- Utilizes the quality assurance and performance improvement process to assess the response to nursing care from patients, families and others.
- Uses clinical skills to provide ongoing assessment and evaluation of nursing care.
- Collaboratively leads development and implementation of the QI plan for the area considering evidence-based practice, the IOM's Six Aims for improving health care, knowledge of principles of performance improvement and customer service.
- Supports and revises patient care based on QI results and current research data. Ensures quality assurance in all aspects of patient nursing care.
- Staffing:
- Proactively evaluates and communicates with Nurse Director the changing needs of the unit, including staffing requirements.
- Collaborates with Clinical Leaders across Ambulatory and Procedural settings to optimize use of shared resources.
- Collaborates with Nurse Director to staff appropriately based on census and acuity. Utilizes resources to meet Department needs.
3. COLLABORATION
- Collaborates with other members of the unit management and medical staff in developing practice guidelines, competencies, and unit specific procedures. Fosters collaboration of health care team members to provide excellent, innovating interdisciplinary patient care.
- Cultivates and strengthens collaborative relationships with leads and staff from all hospital units.
4. PROVISION OF A SAFE ENVIRONMENT
- Anticipates and identifies safety risks and takes appropriate action. Assures compliance with safety standards by assessing staff and patient needs and taking appropriate action.
5. STAFF DEVELOPMENT
- Identifies individual and team learning needs and collaborates with nursing, administrative and medical leadership to develop learning and development interventions to address identified knowledge/practice gaps.
- Communicates and consistently supports the philosophy and goals of the unit, department and hospital.
- Supports orientation and preceptor programs.
- Assists in the development and implementation plan of performance improvement activities.
- Assists in developing and operationalizing mechanisms for data collection related to quality indicators and other unit initiatives.
- Promotes staff participation in unit and hospital committees/task forces and serves on appropriate committees/task forces.
- Delegates appropriately to others in accordance with job description and competency level.
- Supports the ongoing development of staff through coaching, mentoring and role modeling.
- Collaborates with other members of leadership team in providing appropriate educational opportunities for licensed and unlicensed personnel.
6. PROFESSIONAL DEVELOPMENT
- Participates in and provides leadership to departmental and hospital committees as requested.
- Assists in the development of practice initiatives through unit-based group activities.
- Enhances own professional growth and development through participation in educational programs, keeping current with literature, in-service meetings, and workshops.
7. PATIENT/FAMILY EDUCATION
- Supports and facilitates patient/family age-appropriate education into orientation, in-services, and continuing education.
- Develops and implements patient/family teaching protocols and materials if appropriate.
8. CONTINUUM OF CARE
- Facilitates patient information across departments, systems, and other facilities using the electronic health system and other resources.
Supervisory/Managerial Responsibilities:
Evaluates non-licensed staff.
Includes Budgetary Responsibilities:
- Assists in gathering and assessing data to inform recommendations for fiscal management/planning.
- Leads appropriate resource management on the unit.
Qualifications:
- BSN required. MSN or relevant level of clinical expertise in a health-related field preferred.
- Massachusetts Registered Nurse Licensure
- Basic Life Support for Healthcare Providers (BLS) required.
- Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required.
- Current specialty certification relevant to area of coverage preferred or willing to obtain within 1 year of hire required.
- 2-3 years of experience in Endoscopy/Gastroenterology Nursing
- Recent demonstrated history of successful functioning in the charge role.
- Demonstrated history of leadership in enhancing electronic resources to support patient care strongly preferred.
- Acuity of work history may be considered.
- Exemplifies all I.C.A.R.E. standards.
- Demonstrated expertise in evidence-based Endoscopy nursing practice.
- SGNA membership strongly preferred. Current specialty certification relevant to area of coverage preferred or willing to obtain within 1 year of hire required. Must maintain certification for duration of role.
- Demonstrated history of:
