JOB SUMMARY:Directs activities of the Center providing a full range of early childhood services including staff supervision, planning, implementing, and evaluating curriculum.Services encompass programming for a wide variety of ages, hours of operation, funding sources and governing bodies.Responsible for carrying out all duties according to State and Federal Regulations and Agency policies and procedures.JOB DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:
  • Oversees the daily operation of the Discovery Learning Center including care, safety, and education of children.
  • Conducts classroom observations to ensure compliance with regulations, performance standards, quality assurance and effective Early Childhood Education; coaches staff and/or makes recommendations.
  • Provides direct supervision to Day Care staff, Head Start Teachers, and Center Assistant; provides leadership and guidance to all other staff assigned to the center.
  • Ensures adequate staffing and coverage within ratios; substitutes in the classroom when necessary.
  • Interviews, hires and orients new staff; collaborates in the process with appropriate leaders.
  • Collaborates on the oversight of health, family and nutrition staff and services; oversees medication administration for all children.
  • Orients new parents to the center; and communicates regularly with parents.
  • Reviews staff reports, observations, lesson plans, etc. and makes recommendations; contributes to child outcome reporting.
  • Purchases equipment and supplies for the Center; responsible for the start-up of new classrooms or programming.
  • Provides/ensures staff training; schedules and facilitates staff meetings.
  • Handles public relations and marketing for DLC; participates in community events and ensures center representation.
  • Collects tuition, manages Childcare Reimbursement billing and recording, reconciles revenue with accounting.
  • Coordinates fund raising activities for the day care program.
  • Responsible for center newsletter; completes monthly reports and statistical information including MBO, outcomes and CSBG report; assigns tasks to center assistant and monitors work.
  • Maintains contact with the school district personnel, Childcare Council, and other community educational agencies.
  • Advocates for children and families; handles special projects as assigned.
  • Shares information and participates in shared decision making with coordinators and other staff.
  • Attends professional meetings/trainings for skill maintenance/enhancement; participates on agency committees and work groups.
Center Director Duties/Responsibility for Day Care Licensing Process:
  • Works directly with the licensing representative during inspections/renewals; ensures all Day Care Licensing compliance issues are resolved and corrective action is implemented at the center level; carries name/reputation on the license and the OCFS Day Care Center Facility Information Web Site (infractions listed for a two-year period).
  • Responsible for the safe environment of the building, playground, and surrounding areas; takes the lead on all building issues, schedules inspections, service vendors and ensures building is visually appealing and in compliance with regulations.
  • Ensures center files are up to date according to the NYS Day Care Regulations and Head Start Performance Standards.
  • Oversees licensing packets, staff fingerprint and criminal background check results, center inspections; keeps originals and forwards copies to administrative office.
  • Assists with gathering required information for licensing new classrooms, renewals or changes including floor plans.
JOB REQUIREMENTS:
  • Must have knowledge of public services and resources.
  • Must be able to plan and direct the work of others, foster a teamwork environment and be creative in program planning.
  • Must have a desire to work with low-income children and families and have a good understanding of Early Childhood philosophy and the principles of inclusive special education.
  • Must maintain a high degree of confidentiality, exhibit professionalism, good judgment and flexibility.
  • Must have the ability to work with others in a warm, professional manner and be a positive role model to staff, children and parents.
  • Must perform duties in accordance with Agency policies, NYS OCFS regulations, and Head Start performance standards.
  • Must have good communication skills and be able to follow complex oral and written directions.
  • Must possess a valid NYS Driver's License with driving record within agency policy and have access to a reliable vehicle.
  • Must obtain and maintain Personal Agency Vehicle Certification.
  • Must have acceptable physical and mental health to carry out the responsibilities of the position including lifting and participating in activities with children at their level.
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Bachelor's Degree in Early Childhood Education with 3 - 5 years experience working with children, which includes 3 years of supervisory experience; or
  • Certified teacher N - 6 with 12 hours course work in Early Childhood, with 3 - 5 years experience teaching preschool children and 3 years supervisory experience.
