JOB REQUIREMENTS: JOB ID: 21329 UW SYSTEM OFFICIAL TITLE: Network Administrator IV POSTING DATE: October 11, 2024 ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS: The Network Administrator IV reports to the Director of IT Infrastructure Services and is responsible for the design, implementation, monitoring, and maintenance of all wired and wireless data networks across four campuses, including the wide area network (WAN) between campuses and its interface with State data networks and the Internet. This highly technical role requires expertise in a wide range of network technologies and security, including firewalls, intrusion detection and prevention systems, and security appliances. The Network Administrator works with a small team of technicians and student workers to support network connectivity, and collaborates with other IT staff to ensure seamless client, server, and network services throughout the university. This position includes the following responsibilities: Network Infrastructure Design: Design and maintain the University's and Residence Life's network connections, including edge switches, building concentrators, core network switch equipment, firewalls, wireless access points, and routers. Equipment Procurement and Installation: Evaluate and procure new network equipment; oversee installation of hardware, firmware, and management software for network devices. Performance Monitoring and Optimization: Continuously monitor, analyze, and optimize network performance. Track and address network issues, and troubleshoot problems that are beyond the capabilities of installation and monitoring staff. Documentation and Training: Document procedures for critical installations and repairs. Provide training for technical staff on mission-critical installations. UPS and Environmental Monitoring: Design and maintain Uninterruptible Power Supply (UPS) systems and environmental monitoring solutions for network and server equipment. Network Security Monitoring: Monitor device logs for potential security threats, such as virus infections and excessive bandwidth usage. Notify the Information Technology Security Office (ITSO) and assist with incident remediation. System Coordination: Oversee connections to and coordinate upgrades with the UW-System data network. TCP/IP Management: Assign and configure TCP/IP addresses for clients, servers, and specialized devices, ensuring proper configuration across the network. Firewall Software Management: Install, configure, and test new firewall software releases, ensuring optimal functionality for bandwidth management, traffic filtering, and VPN access. Security Rule Configuration: Modify firewall security rules to accommodate changes in server and network environments, enhancing security while maintaining required functionality. Security Monitoring: Regularly review firewall logs to identify potential security issues and recommend improvements to optimize network security. Threat Detection and Response: Monitor firewall flows to detect malware or virus-infected workstations. Notify the ITSO and assist in resolving these issues. Security Team Participation: Serve as a key member of the Information Technology Security Incident Response Team, contributing to the development of university-wide security procedures. Network Growth Planning: Assess current and future network needs, developing long-range plans for network expansion and enhancement. If you have any questions, need accommodations, or submitted your application with missing materials, call or email: Arianna Hilbert Phone: (920) ###-#### Email: hilbertauwgb.edu For additional details and to apply, visit the following website and search for Job ID 21329: www.careers.wis onsin.edu OTHER EXPERIENCE AND QUALIFICATIONS: MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS: Bachelor's degree in Information Technology, applicable field at time of application or equivalent experience Three years of experience in managing medium to large-scale wired and wireless network infrastructures, including network design, implementation, monitoring, and troubleshooting Knowledge and extensive work experience of Ethernet network design and implementation including copper and/or fiber optic circuits, switches, routers, firewall, network intrusion detection, network intrusion prevention, network access control, virtual private networking, and/or network management equipment and systems Thorough understanding of network implementation concepts including virtual local area networks to segment and isolate different traffic types, routing, IP subnetting, unicast, multicast, broadcast, switching, DHCP relay, access control lists, routing protocols, encryption, authentication, and IP packet forwarding Knowledge and extensive work experience with the design and implementation of 802.11 wireless networks In-depth knowledge and understanding of network physical and logical standards Knowledge of the TCP/IP V4 and V6 protocols and the types of messages sent on a Microsoft Windows based network PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS: Experience in a higher education environment In-depth understanding of the computer field with a focus on Microsoft Windows server operating systems, Macintosh operating systems, and Android/Apple IOS mobile APPLICATION INSTRUCTIONS: Apply Online: Qualified females, minorities, and special disabled veterans and other veterans are encouraged to apply.
