This position is responsible for installing, testing, maintaining, and reading water metering devices throughout the City. Examples of Duties
  • Maintain backflow prevention devices.
  • Perform basic plumbing work, including threading and soldering pipes.
  • Investigate customer concerns and complaints.
  • Observe and report violations of the National Electric Code, plumbing codes, or public safety regulations.
  • Install and maintain electric meters and communications devices.
  • Read meters on a route to record water and electric consumption in a hand-held computer and make visual checks while on assigned routes to see that meters are functioning properly and that no tampering is taking place.
  • Respond to emergency situations and support other City departments/divisions in the abatement of emergency situations, such as snow plowing.
  • May be upgraded to the Electric Meter and Communications Technician, if qualified.
Qualifications
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Minimum of one year of experience with plumbing and/or electricity, with ability to perform basic plumbing skills.
  • Strong interpersonal communication skills for interaction with staff and the public.
  • Strong organization and time management skills to work under an appointment-based schedule.
  • Fundamental mathematics skills to calculate rapidly and accurately.
  • Ability to write legibly.
  • Knowledge of Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel, Outlook e-mail, Orion Profile Software, and the ability to maintain databases, including GIS.
  • Applicants must be able to lift 50 lbs., work under varying environmental conditions.
  • Respond to emergencies 24 hours a day, 7 days a week and carry a communication device (reporting no later than 60 minutes of the call-in).
  • Class A CDL with appropriate endorsements or obtain within 6 months of hire (in-house training available)
  • If selected, successful completion of a background investigation, physical, functional capacity evaluation and drug screen are required. CDL holders will be run through the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Clearinghouse pre-employment.
