The award-winning Brooklyn Park Recreation and Parks Department is looking for highly motivated, team-oriented, and enthusiastic individuals who have a desire to make a difference in Brooklyn Park by working within adaptive skating lessons. An Adaptive Skating Specialist is responsible for supporting within adaptive ice skating lessons designed for children and adults with developmental disabilities. This position may also support inclusion services within general ice skating lessons and work 1:1 with skaters with disability-related needs. The Adaptive Skating Specialist will work under the general supervision of the Adaptive Recreation Specialist.

* Adaptive Skating Specialists report to the Adaptive Recreation Specialist in charge of adaptive recreation and inclusion services.
* Assist with instruction of adaptive skating lessons and follow the Learn to Skate USA Adaptive Skating Program guidelines.
* Upon hire, staff will need to become a Learn to Skate Member and take a short exam through Learn to Skate, as well as become Safe Sport Certified. Costs will be covered by the City of Brooklyn Park.
Note: instructors over 18 are also required to have a bi-yearly background check through Learn to Skate.
* Provide inclusion support for children and adults with disability- related needs, including support with social, emotional, cognitive, and physical needs when necessary, during ice skating lessons.
* Provide activity adaptations and medical/behavioral support when necessary.
* Communicate progress with participant families/guardians/caregivers on a regular basis.
* Communicate with program staff, Ice Skating Director, and Adaptive Recreation Specialist about participant progress and necessary accommodations.
* Perform other duties as assigned or apparent.
Education
No education requirement
Experience
* 16 years of age or older
* One (1) to three (3) years of experience working with people with disabilities, especially children, as a staff or volunteer
Equivalency
An equivalent combination of education and experience closely related to the duties of the position MAY be considered.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
* Knowledge of and a thorough understanding of ice skating principles.
* An ability to confidently move around on ice skates (ice skates can be rented free of charge from Brooklyn Park Recreation & Parks Department).
* Ability to work with multiple children or adults with disability-related needs during program time.
* Must possess a genuine interest in the needs of all program participants and be able to work in a team atmosphere.
* Must possess the ability to assess participant progress and make decisions about accommodations during program time.
* Must possess the ability to interact with participants and parents/guardians/caregivers in a responsible and professional manner and respond to concerns with tact and courtesy.
* Ability to respond maturely to any emergency or incident that may arise.
* Ability to work independently and with minimal supervision during program time.
* Must possess basic problem-solving skills.
* Ability to relate and work effectively with people from diverse cultural, socioeconomic, racial and ethnic backgrounds.
* Ability to provide a level of customer service that meets/exceeds customer expectation and satisfaction.
* Embrace and engage in cultural shift toward Continuous Improvement.
Desired Qualifications
* Three (3)+ years of experience working with people with disability- related needs, as staff or volunteer.
* Knowledge of and a thorough understanding of Learn to Skate USA ice skating principles.
* Completion of the U.S. Figure Skating Core Certified Coach course.
* Current certification in CPR and First Aid.
* Current with Certified Therapeutic Recreation Specialist credential.
* Completion of additional training in Autism, behavior support, therapeutic recreation, special education, or related field.
* Previous experience working with people from various cultural, socioeconomic, racial, and ethnic backgrounds.
* Fluency in Spanish, Hmong, Russian, Somali, Laotian or Vietnamese.

Anticipated Work Schedule: During the school year Adaptive Skating lessons will take place on Tuesday evenings from 7:00 - 7:30pm. During the summer months (July - August), adaptive skating lessons will take place on Wednesday evenings from 7:30 - 8:00pm. Additional opportunities to support inclusion services within general ice skating lessons will be available on Tuesday and Wednesday evenings, and Saturday mornings/afternoons, pending the program schedule and participant registration.
Anticipated Hiring Wage: $13.91 - $25.24, depending on qualifications
Limited Benefits (statutorily mandated):
* Sick Leave - Employees earn one hour of Sick Leave for every 30 hours worked, up to a maximum of 48 hours of Sick Leave per year. This specific leave applies to all employees (including temporary and part-time employees) performing for at least 80 hours in a year for the City.
* Pension - Enrollment in the Public Employees Retirement Association (PERA) Coordinated Plan is automatic. Currently the City's contribution rate is 7.50% and the employee's rate is 6.50%.
