Position Summary:

We are looking for a skilled and motivated Animal Research Technician to join our team. The successful candidate will play a crucial role in the care and management of research animals while ensuring compliance with applicable regulations and company policies. This position involves hands-on work with animals, performing husbandry tasks, conducting health assessments, and assisting in research activities.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide daily care for animals, including feeding, watering, and providing enrichment materials. Maintain, adjust, and repair animal pens, feeders, drinking systems, and livestock handling equipment.
  • Perform cleaning and sanitation of animal rooms and equipment to uphold biosecurity standards.
  • Restrain and manipulate animals for routine and emergency procedures. Conduct daily health and welfare assessments, recognizing and communicating any signs of distress or illness to the Site Veterinarian or Group/Team Leader.
  • Administer treatments to animals under the direction of the Site Veterinarian or delegate, including experimental treatment articles in accordance with study protocols.
  • Conduct clinical observations and disease outcome assessments. Record all scientific information accurately on designated study protocol documents or standard department forms.
  • Under supervision, administer and monitor sedation and conduct euthanasia in accordance with study protocols and at the direction of the Site Veterinarian or delegate.
  • Perform site biosecurity functions, including sanitation of water systems, decontamination of feed and materials, and environmental auditing sample collection.
  • Assist with clinical research and development sample collection pre- and post-mortem, including but not limited to blood, feces, oral fluids, nasal swabs, tissues, and necropsies as directed.

Qualifications:

  • Previous experience working with laboratory animals in a research or clinical setting is highly desirable.
  • Familiarity with animal care standards and regulations, including GLP and IACUC guidelines.
  • Ability to work in extreme environments (hot, cold, noisy, humid) with a focus on biosecurity. Must demonstrate persistence and energy in a dynamic, fast-paced environment. Ability to lift up to 70 pounds occasionally and up to 50 pounds frequently.
  • Willingness to work directly with animals during ante-mortem and post-mortem procedures. Must not have allergies to animals or livestock/feed dust. Rare travel outside the local area may be required.
