Job Summary

Install, repair, replace and maintain all components of streetlight and traffic signal systems including poles and bases, mast arms, span wires, guy wires, signal and streetlight fixtures, controller cabinets and bases, conduit, junction boxes, and related wiring and circuitry in compliance with state and federal regulations. Locate streetlight, signal, interconnect, and traffic signal wiring for contractors and utility companies; interpret maps and drawings; operate electronic locator. Install, program, and trouble shoot video detection systems.

This is a full-time, regular, non-exempt union position. This position is covered under the provisions of an agreement between the City and AFSCME.

Job Details

Essential Functions:

* Install, repair, replace and maintain all components of streetlight and traffic signal systems including poles and bases, mast arms, span wires, guy wires, signal and streetlight fixtures, controller cabinets and bases, conduit, junction boxes, and related wiring and circuitry in compliance with state and federal regulations.

* Operate a variety of circuit testing and related tools and equipment to perform complex electrical and electronic repairs; operate a variety of power and hand tools including drills, drill press, wrenches, sockets, pliers, and screwdrivers.

* Operate bucket truck to install, maintain and repair traffic signal systems; set, street light bases, poles, span cables, and service and controller cabinets; wire in pavement cuts and underground conduits and wire; construct and install signal induction loops; assist in digging ditches and pole bases as required.

* Locate streetlight, signal, and traffic signal wiring for contractors and utility companies; interpret maps and drawings; operate electronic locator.

* Install, program, and trouble shoot video detection systems.

* Coordinate, review, and inspect the work of contractors installing traffic signa/street lighting systems.

* Maintain traffic signal and maintenance records; input data into computer.

* Respond to traffic signal and street lighting emergency repairs as required

* Carry after hours pager

* Calculate and change signal timing as needed to improve traffic flow and safety.

* Answer questions and provide information to the public and City employees concerning traffic signal and street lighting activities.

* Perform routine labor functions such as cleaning shop area, stocking of inventory and basic preventative maintenance of vehicles.

Qualifications

Experience and Education

* Three (3) years of traffic signal experience

* Associate's Degree

* Journey level card or training from an accredited apprenticeship program

* Equivalent combinations of education and experience may be considered.

Computer Skills

* Microsoft Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint.

* Software encompassing traffic signal and lighting control systems.

Required Licenses and/or Certifications

* Possession of, or ability to obtain, an appropriate, valid driver's license.

* Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid flaggers card

* Possession of, or ability to obtain a CDL with tanker endorsement within one year of hire.

* Possession of, or ability to obtain, an IMSA Level I traffic signal technician certification within one year of hire.

* Possession of, or ability to obtain, IMSA Level II Traffic Signal Technician Certification within three years of hire

Knowledge

* Electronic systems, including solid state component systems, digital electronics, and integrated circuits.

* Microprocessor technology as utilized in traffic signal systems.

* Principles of traffic operations, maintenance, and design.

* Principles involved in the design and operation of traffic signal control devices, communications systems, and system engineering.

* Traffic signal software programs and operations.

* Methods, materials and techniques used in the construction of traffic control and street lighting system construction and maintenance projects.

* Principles and practices of project and construction management.

* Operational characteristics of mechanical and hydraulic equipment used in the installation and repair of electrical and electronic systems.

* Electronic systems repair and preventative maintenance techniques and procedures.

* Tools and equipment used in the maintenance and repair of electronic systems.

* Uses and purposes of general construction tools and equipment.

* Safely operate ariel bucket trucks.

* Principles and practices of development review.

* Safe work practices.

* Principles of mathematics in solving AC/DC theory

* Knowledge of electrical circuitry including three phase wiring

* Familiarity with state and national electrical codes

* Pertinent federal, state and local laws that pertain to: traffic laws and regulations relating to traffic control

* Modern office procedures, methods and computer equipment

* Use of personal computers and basic software

Abilities

* Interpret and explain Department policies and procedures.

* Read and interpret electronic schematics, diagrams, drawings and plans

* Operate a personal computer and appropriate software
