Position Summary and Responsibilities
The Sergeant/Supervisor is responsible for directing the day-to-day operations on their assigned shift and collaborating with various campus departments/constituency groups. The Sergeant must be able to supervise effectively and give corrective instructions when appropriate. They must engage in helping develop growth in department members and the department as a whole. This position reports to the Administrative Lieutenant and Director of Safety & Security.
Safety and Security supervisors must be capable of and willing to work all shifts and overtime as needed. All shifts include all hours, days of the week, and holidays. Shifts may be reassigned on a short- and long-term basis according to departmental needs.
Employment is contingent upon successful completion of one-year probationary period and satisfactory results of a background check.
Position responsibilities:
* Assign Officers shift posts/ patrols and conduct shift briefings. Monitor job performance of officers.
* Informs and assigns officers to special details/ assignments occurring on shift.
* Approve and manage time/leave in the College's timekeeping/payroll program and the department scheduling program (VCS) per College and Department guidelines.
* Coordinate response to calls for service or emergencies with police, fire, EMS, or college service as needed. Prepare and/or direct immediate emergency notifications to the campus as appropriate.
* Respond to all emergency calls for service that require supervisory (in depth, complicated or sensitive) action.
* Monitor the department computerized records management system for proper entries and information.
* Train officers in new procedures, use of equipment, etc.
* Review and inform all officers of policy changes, updates, briefings and/ or special orders.
* Review officers' reports for accuracy and comprehensiveness.
* Make notifications to the Director of Safety & Security and other College officials regarding important information, incidents of a sensitive nature, per College and Department guidelines.
* Sends daily DOC and other listserv reports.
* Oversee field training occurring on their shift.
* Assist with educational programming and other duties as assigned.
* Assists with campus event security as needed.
* Responsible for reading, understanding, and responding to College and Department emails in a timely manner.
Qualifications
Required knowledge, skills and abilities
* Possess and maintain a New York State Driver License.
* Must possess a valid NYS Security Guard license or a valid 8-hour pre assignment training certificate with the ability to attain license within 30 days.
* Minimum of 3 years experience as a full time Security/Police/Peace/Community Engagement Officer.
* 30 college credits or formal supervisory training at a recognized agency or institution.
* Ability to perform CPR/AED and CPR/AED certification required or attainable; ability to effectively use Narcan and Narcan certification required or attainable.
* Ability to communicate effectively in English, written and verbally.
* Ability to react calmly and effectively in emergency situations and to deescalate charged situations.
* Ability to lift 50 lbs. or more. and move 75 lbs. or more.
* Ability to stand and walk for long periods of time.
* Ability to work overtime as needed/mandated.
* Ability to work outdoors in all weather conditions.
* Working knowledge of the NYS Penal Law and general familiarity with/ability to learn relevant federal and state laws that apply to college campuses.
* Experience overseeing and conducting employee training and field training.
* A strong service orientation and demonstrated ability to work in a diverse multicultural community.
* Sufficient computer experience to be able to prepare reports and effectively use all software programs available to the department.
Preferred knowledge, skills and abilities
* Supervisory experience as a full-time Security/Policy/Peace/Community Engagement Officer.
* Associates degree or higher preferred.
Travel Requirements:
* Some local travel may be required.
