A Brief Overview Provides mental health counseling and support services to children and their families, which facilitates the use of individual, public, and private resources to ensure optimal functioning for both the patient and the family. These core services include assessment of psychosocial functioning and capacities, counseling for care planning and decision-making, and community resource planning. Mental health counselors collaborate with many disciplines, programs, departments, and organizations to accomplish these duties. What you will do Provides skilled psychosocial assessment and collaborates with care teams to provide quality comprehensive treatment to patients and families. Conducts clinical assessments of patients and their families. Utilizes appropriate psychotherapeutic treatment modalities to achieve patient/ family goals. Collaborates with team members in planning ongoing care and discharge planning for patients and arranges these services promptly. Completes documentation promptly that is accurate, legible, clear, and organized according to department, hospital, and legal standards. Provides leadership in identifying barriers to effective service delivery or problems in work assignments. Actively contributes to or initiates quality improvement projects that improve service delivery. Provides in-service education for program staff and, when appropriate, serves as a field instructor or preceptor for students. Recognizes professional strengths and areas for growth and is accountable for the development and enhancement of professional practice skills Provides individual counseling or appropriately refers children. Provides supportive counseling to families who are experiencing distress related to their emotional or behavioral difficulties. Provides group therapy for each treatment milieu weekly and completes all necessary documentation Completes initial referral screening assessment Coordinates with registration for scheduling to ensure adequate program admissions. Collaborates with community providers regarding the referral process. Coordinate and collaborate with community providers to ensure adequate referrals. Provides ongoing information, referral, and support to families Coordinates and facilitates effective parenting and psycho-educational groups for caregivers Provides individual and family counseling for children with emotional or behavioral difficulties Provides individual and family counseling for children experiencing distress and impairment in the aftermath of trauma and adverse event exposure Provides clinical leadership and supervision during crises Works collaboratively with community agencies to provide resources for patients and families Manages and compiles ongoing clinical outcome data for patients and families Provides consultative services to external agencies, as requested Assists in needs assessment for services for children Assists in the development of systems and services for children and families Education Qualifications Master's Degree Required Experience Qualifications Experience providing care to youth and families who have experienced trauma and adversity required. Skills and Abilities Knowledge of typical and atypical child development and related areas. Knowledge of child psychopathology. Knowledge of therapy and psychological assessment techniques with children and families. Knowledge of behavioral methodology and principles. Ability to communicate verbally and in writing in English. Ability to direct and motivate staff teams. Critical analysis and problem-solving skills. Ability to work independently. Ability to work collaboratively with other healthcare team providers. Ability to develop trusting relationships with patients, families, and staff. Ability to work with sensitivity to cultural diversity and assist staff in understanding this diversity. Ability to identify community resources for families and advocate on their behalf. Ability to present self with a professional approach and appearance with a high level of emotional maturity. Ability to learn public health policy and health care legislation and respond to it as a family advocate. Licenses and Certifications Licensed Professional Counselor (LPC) (Pennsylvania) - Pennsylvania State Licensing Board - upon hire - Required or Licensed Clinical Social Worker (LCSW) (Pennsylvania) - Pennsylvania State Licensing Board - upon hire - Required or Psychologist License - Pennsylvania State Licensing Board - upon hire - Required To carry out its mission, CHOP is committed to supporting the health of our patients, families, workforce, and global community.
