Who we are? Ethical Culture Fieldston School is a progressive PreK-12 independent school that has been serving students from throughout New York City and the surrounding suburbs since 1878. ECFS offers a rich curriculum in the arts, sciences, and humanities. A co-ed, nonsectarian school, it serves a diverse community of about 1,700 students on two campuses one in the Riverdale section of the Bronx and the other in Manhattan. The Upper School, located in the Bronx, is comprised of approximately 600 students and 80 faculty members. What is essential about working at our school? Position Summary This role will design and lead various program initiatives, as outlined in association with the Chief Executive Officer, Principals, and other administrators. This role will also conduct institutional and educational research, both related to these initiatives and on other subjects. This role will also lead the ECFS Progressive Teaching Institute (PTI) - the signature professional development experience for the ECFS community. PTI serves as the onboarding mechanism for new ECFS employees and offers a variety of experiences for faculty and staff to enhance their educational practice. The Institute offers seminars and workshops aimed at uniting educators, exploring the philosophical realms of progressive education, and delving into the co-curricular aspects of the School's four divisions. The incumbent in this position will also work closely with ECFS faculty, staff, and administration to coordinate and implement dynamic professional development programming for the ECFS community. The hiring range for this position is $220,000-$260,000. When determining the salary for an offer, ECFS considers factors including, but not limited to: the scope and responsibilities of the position, internal peer equity, key skills required for the role, the candidate's work experience, education and training, as well as market and organizational considerations. Responsibilities Specific responsibilities of this role will include, although not simultaneously: In coordination with faculty, department chairs, principals, and assistant principals, this role will devise and implement reviews of academic areas to ensure consistency with contemporary teaching and learning practices, lead progressive pedagogy across divisions, and ensure consistency with the School's mission, vision, and values. Guides curricular/teaching initiatives and alignment across divisions, including shared responsibility for organizing professional development activities. Collaborating with the Director of Technology, ensure that curricular initiatives are aligned with cutting-edge technology resources and best practices. Partner with colleagues to conduct institutional research on learning and effectiveness. In conjunction with principals, assistant principals, and other constituents, analyze and align curriculum from Pre-K to 12th grade. Creating professional development plans to ensure that the curriculum remains on the cutting edge while having a transparent process around placement. Leading a talented team to design, plan, coordinate, and deliver the August PTI Institute while fostering a sense of belonging with new faculty members and ensuring responsiveness to their needs throughout the year. Partnering with the senior administration to envision and design opening meeting days and all-school professional development days. Reintroducing and reinvigorating PTI Extensions - a series of professional development workshops throughout the school year that are created and delivered by ECFS faculty and staff. Managing an overall budget to support specific academic curricular focuses and inquiries, the PTI program, and other special projects. Performing other related projects tasks and duties as assigned. Position Requirements The successful candidate must have: Masters Degree in Education, Educational Leadership or related field; A minimum of 5 years of leadership experience in positions such as Assistant Principal, Principal, or Curriculum Coordinator; Strong ability to analyze data to help drive results; An enthusiastic leader who can inspire and guide others through challenges associated with curriculum alignment; Demonstrated knowledge of progressive pedagogy and experience in designing and implementing research-based instructional practices; Significant cultural competency and experience in creating and administering curriculum, instruction, and professional development; Experience with, or interest in, leading a team of talented professionals; High emotional intelligence (EQ) and an ability to relate well to all constituencies in a school setting; The capacity to set clear expectations for teams and review systems and structures of a four-division, two-campus institution; The ability to confidently collaborate and build relationships with faculty, administrators, the student and parent community; A commitment to diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging to continue growing equitable programs that meet the needs of employees, students, and families; Confidence in the ability to stay calm in stressful situations that may arise; Respect and appreciation for diversity in all of its forms; Exemplary communication skills: written, verbal, and listening to effectively communicate initiatives, facilitate discussions, and present to various levels of stakeholders; Ability to identify issues quickly and problem-solve accordingly; Exceptional organizational skills and attention to detail; The ability to listen effectively and be receptive to feedback.
